I often looked for Paul Newman olive oil but all I ever found was Paul Newman olive oil & vinegar dressing. I do not like my olive oil mixed with that other stuff so I ended up just buying straight "non Paul Newman" olive oil from Greece or Italy.

Paul Newman was a bit before my time so the only movie I remember him in was that pool-shark movie he made with Tom Cruise a while back. When I was a kid, my mother used to drop me and my friends off to see a movie, usually something like "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" or one of those Herbie the Volkswagon type movies. But one time, my friend and I bought ticket to "The Sting" instead, thinking is was some kind of horror movie about giant insects or something. Boy, were we ever disappointed. I think I was 10 years old at the time and that movie made absolutely no sense to me and my friend at all. I always meant to see that movie again as an adult but I never got around to it.

You should definitely watch “The Sting” and also “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Newman and Redford are both leftists, but those two movies are classics.

If you get cable TV, I'm sure Turner Classic Movies will have a day's worth of his films when he passes.

Go rent The Sting today. It is one of the all-time great movies. I guarantee you'll love it.

We’ve been using his Light Lime Vinaigrette as a marinade (mostly for fish) and it’s quite excellent.

Try “The Verdict” (1982). Brilliant performance as a down-on-his-luck lawyer who recovers his mojo and moral center.

Cruise credits Newman with turning him into the nutball he is today. Not in those words, of course, but he says Paul berated him for making the "jingoistic" Top Gun and "opened his eyes" to what was wrong with America. It was soon after that that he signed on for Born On the Fourth to begin making up for Top Gun.

At one time, Cruise was studying to be a priest. I don't know if Newman had anything to do with his falling away from that and into Scientology.

I was only 13 when “The Sting” came out, and it was one of best movies I ever saw. It was easy to understand, too.
