Raping Georgia: Russia Invades An American Ally
New York Post ^ | 8/9/2008 | Ralph Peters

AS I write, Russian tanks grind into a brave and isolated democratic state.

Assuming that the world's attention would focus on Beijing, Moscow stage-managed an elaborate act of aggression against Georgia.

But the world has changed since Soviet tanks rolled unchallenged into Afghanistan at Christmastime 29 years ago. Global communications now spotlight aggression instantly. remainder of article at website

I've yet much to learn.

I do know that the Independent States, in which Georgia figures spectacularly, have been awesome in supporting and sending troops into Iraq and Afghanistan throughout the War on Terror. GEORGIA TO SEND, LITHUANIA TO AUGMENT TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN

I could probably dig the article out; but during their support; Russia was "ordering" the Independent States to stay OUT of it; and the Independent States retorted with catcalls. Telling Russia to mind its own business.

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and Islamic Republic of Afghanistan were established on March 5, 2003.

And last but not least...... Russia was one of the largest beneficiaries of Saddam Hussein's OIL 4 FOOD scam.

With Georgia as an ally, possibly getting greater access to cheaper oil, maybe, also, Russia has an interest in that regard.

What leads me to this conjecture?

A U.S.-backed oil pipeline runs through Georgia, allowing the West to reduce its reliance on Middle Eastern oil while bypassing Russia and Iran. Georgia's Oil Pipeline

More info on Georgia's Oil

Nancy Pelosi can save the Plane via DRILL HERE-DRILL NOW.

No Blood for Oil, Nancy? You'd rather see a war, see America dragged into another war, than simply drill gas on US soil -- which we know we already have?

Ah, yes, it becomes clear... "Russian jets targeted major oil pipeline-Georgia, August 8, 2008. Reuters

More evidence as to how the US Democrats keep dragging the U.S. into wars. Russia targeted a US backed Oil Pipeline in Georgia. A pipeline which allows the US to bypass Russia and Iran in purchasing oil.

Early reports suggest Georgia did not give us a headsup on any of this

Whoa. If true, it does beg questions.

From Anne Applebaum's link (you posted): Russia says Georgia advanced first; Georgia says Russia advanced first.

In re my earlier to you: Rumors that Georgia gave the US no heads up on this... Miss Applebaum: "The Georgian leadership, by contrast, had come to believe that the constant pressure of Russian aggression, coupled with the West's failure to accept Georgia into NATO, compelled them to demonstrate "self-reliance."

Excellent Points

Also if I were Bush, I’d go to DEFCON 2...just to get Pooty Poots attention.

But, then again, I’m not Bush.

Right; but the Clinton Admin officials asserted we need only to “dialogue”, and maybe with a wee show of backing to prove ourselves. And somehow a Rennaissance Faire would cosmically happen, and peace would inhabit the land. Really, nothing was cleared up. Or made clear.

I could give a flying Fck if Georgia is our "ally", so was the "KLA" of Albania/Kosovo. If they are wrong, they are wrong which is what they are. I don't agree with McCain on this and we should tell Georgia to get out of S.O.

Unfortunately, Russia is right on this, they are protecting their own citizens/people... i.e Grenada anyone?

Why are you not screaming at the Georgians for invading S.O??? You are a complete moronic idiot. Why don’t you get back to the DU forum?

Exactly. Making our former WWII allies out to be the aggressor and turning a blind eye to the atrocities of the other side... disgraceful.

S. O. is part of Georgia. Russian soldier have been crossing into Ossetia a couple days before the main invasion. They were fighting along side with the rebels to provoke a reaction from Georgia. This has nothing to do with protecting Russian citizens(btw, the us has plenty of those here) It is about gaining control of oil pipelines and destroying a pro western Democracy. Why don’t you go back to the Kremlin?

The Soviets murdered 10s of millions of their own citizens. They enslaved eastern Europe and fought against us by proxy over the last half century. Don't you remember the cold war? The way you ignore history and the behavior of Russia is... disgraceful.

The former Soviet slaves are comming out against Russia and warning about people like you.

The three Baltic presidents signed a joint declaration stating “we will use all means available to us as Presidents to ensure that aggression against a small country in Europe will not be passed over in silence or with meaningless statements equating the victims with the victimizers."

You are doing just this. Equating the victims with the victimizers. Its a common liberal tactic. They do use it to blame the US for 911. They use it to blame Israel for the Palestinian terrorism. It seems that the former slaves of Russia don't share your non discriminating, every body is guilty view point.

Are you speaking historically or landgrabbed? Don't go there as you are opening up a can of worms, did we not provide advisors to the S.Vietnamese, Honduran, Columbian and many other nations in order to protect and advance our own national interests?

Well then, the Iraqi war was all about securing a vast oil reserves that is untapped. Why am I not going to the Kremlin? Mainly is that I'm doing my second tour in Iraq as I do support my countrys stay in Iraq to prevent a power vacuum and shift in the balance of power/leanings etc...

I still support the Russians in kicking out the Georgians of S.O.

If you know anything about the eastern Euro style and version of "democracy", it is nothing and will never be our way of democracy. So, no, the Georgians were not 'American' democracy form of govt, it was soviet style democracy, very close to a communist version of democracy.

What a bunch of crap. Are you equating the US to Russia? Are they moral equivalents? Many countries in Eastern Europe are trying to have real democracies but Russia keep interfering. Georgia got too uppity and now they are bing punished. All that Russia has brought to the countries in its sphere of influence is poverty and oppression.

Hmmm, does the US not "interfere" with other nations? What about the Brits, French, Germans, italians, Russians, Swedes, Chinese, Canadians etc? Don't they do things that help promote their own politics and govt?

Don't we or haven't we done things to build up our country while at the same time we do what is necassary to maintain our strength while not allowing other nations to become strong like ourselves to challenge us?

The E.European nations will never have a democracy such as ours or near equivilant. Their historical cultural-set won't allow it. Reverse the scenario, we can never have the same marxism-form govt those nations had/have. We are not geared mindset that way.

You are blinded and one way of thought, sorry, but you are. Either that, or you are just too damn biased to see the big picture. That is wy we failed in the early stages in Iraq til the past year. We set the standard that is set in "our way", not the locals "way".

about ten years ago, the S.Ossetians held a vote to break from Georgia...that vote was declared illegal and null’d by the Georgians and OSCE. i.e Bosnia - S.Ossetia comparision, they both held a vote and one was allowed (illegaly - bosnia) and the other that voted to secede and was denied... hmmmm

What are you, a world citizen like Obama? The US is a good nation. Russia is not. They are not equivalents. Ask the east and west Germans.

The U.S. gets involved when it has an interest. The U.S. has invested in Georgia. Should the U.S. just give that investment away to Russia?

Try not sounding "progressively" Liberal. I've been around the world and have spent time in Southern Eastern Europe and am adamently anti-communist/marxist/socialist and am a very Conservative American with slight libertarian leanings (but not much).

YOu have to look at making these decisions from a localy culturaly standpoint along with American perspectives. You can't figt all the fights, you have to let some go, otherwise, we would be all over the world stretched too thin.

I say let the Russians take back S.Ossetia as the ossetians are more or less Russians and want Russian backing and nothing to do with Georgia. If so, Georgia will have a restive native population.
