Des Moines, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain didn't mince words Friday at the Iowa State Fair, telling corn producers he didn't want to subsidize their ethanol but was eager to help market farm products around the world.
"My friends, we will disagree on a specific issue and that's healthy," McCain said as he stood near bales of straw at one of the nation's premier farming showcases. "I believe in renewable fuels. I don't believe in ethanol subsidies, but I believe in renewable fuels."
McCain has never been shy about speaking against subsidizing ethanol when he is in farm country, though that stand helped to make him unpopular enough in Iowa that he skipped participating in its leadoff presidential caucuses . . .

Good for McCain.
Good for him. That’s actually being a maverick in a good cause.
A non-pandering stand by McCain?
I didn't think it was possible.
Are those pigs trying to get out of my butt. Those wings hurt.
I agree with him, and I’m impressed that he would say it frankly to their faces.
Wow, I like the crusty “white haired guy” more and more.
How many pols would have the stones to do this. Not very many at all.
Bravo, BIG JOHN!
Bold.
What ever happened to the french fries grease thing that Willie Nelson was supposedly using to propel his BIG tour bus down the road?
Thank you John McCain. More subsidies? NO!!
Right on.
On the other side, the messiah is telling oil producing states to stop drilling.
that was his position from the beginning. Free trade and no corporate welfare.
I am no fan of McCain, but I’m genuinely impressed to his showing some backbone to the ethanol lobby in Iowa. Now, if he would only do the same to the illegal alien lobby, I would not only vote for him, but enthusiastically support him.
Subsidized labor costs by supporting illegal immigration is the ultimate form of corporate welfare.
Wow. This actually took guts. It may cost him IA, but he’s absolutely right.
That’s actually a conservative position he took. What’s going on here? Am I being punked?!! ASHTON!!!
What the frick is wrong with using OIL?
It’s a natural substance that replenishes and we have plenty of it. Ethanol is not.
If we don’t use it, it will boil up from the earth and THAT would be a real big mess. LOL Maybe not so funny, hmmmm?
