The Chickens are coming home to roost. EVERYONE except the half-witted Bush administration, saw that recognition of Kosovo would help set this off.

Again, you're trying to pretend that actions have consequences! Just wave the flag and shout a bit, and you don't need to worry about that...we're Americans, after all...we don't have to face reality!

It is a world game. We have been sitting at the table for a hundred years, you don’t just pick up your chips and throw in your cards because you don’t like the game. I will never understand you head in the sand isolationist.

True. It is the responsibility of every great empire to run itself into the ground and make way for the next up-and-coming star.

Tom Clancy was right. He predicted it spot on. This is what we are witnessing. I hope the Russians overplay their frozen hands.

I guess I am way out in this company to say that I dont want to support issues that have little to do with me and mine. I want to focus on US Defense. I want our governmetn to field the best gurrilla warriors in the world. I want our populace to be armens. I want true defense measures. Not jerking around in somebody elses country.

Sadly I don’t see what we can do.

Reality is we are having major issues with fighting the brush fires we in now. We can’t do much more than ask for talks, Georgia is to isolated.

A really maudlin appeal to watch the Opening Ceremonies in Putin’s private compartment along with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. It was tasteless and frankly, quite boorish.

I am sure the Georgian people have some left over Russian anti-tank hand-helds. The Russians must have left them in a pile somewhere :)

I do not mean to be cute. We do not want to get actively engaged in this affair as a hot war with the Russians. The Soviet Empire wishes to revive itself and reclaim land. We may want to stop communism again but this is NOT the time for it.

Bull, when the Russian’s acted so bellicose towards them for the last four years the Georgians knew what was coming and this is not a dessert where air power can flatten everything. And I would say if the Georgians repel them which they should we had best get the old Pershings out and reployed. Russia is the willing instruement of destruction for our globe, as an old culture chaos is nothing new to them.

I'm no war hawk but isn't it easier to deal with the situation before they reclaim the land?

Exactly. Once KBMeister started the targeted political killings and seizing private assets in energy we should know what’s coming. But our leadership is too worried how they can fleece our own Middle Class citizenship of wealth in an attempt to remedy 30 years worth of promises that can no longer be kept. Hey, you got a good excuse to crank up the war machine of 75% GDP and throw energy independence to boot. Perhaps there is a silver lining in every dark cloud.

A small differenc e\in your scenario. Puerto Rico is a US territoy, Ossetia is a part of Georgia, not Russia.

To make your scenario more accurate, make it a bunch of Mexican Americans along the Rio Grande, where they are the clear majority, decide they want to be a part of Mexico and establish autonomy. When the State of Texas cracks down to restore order, Mexico invades to "protect" their many civilians there.

I am not syaing that everyhting Georgia has done has been best...but it is their country and they have an area that wants to break away and be a part of Russia...a very samll area with a very small part of the population. (I believe less than 70K)

What is really happening here IMHO is that Russia is using this as a pretext to make an example and test the resolve of the west.

You make a good point about the Balkans. The Bear will absorb the Hog, yes. This will take some time. If the dolts on that Hill don’t make energy INCLUDING DRILLING a top priority we are going to pay a very, very big price in lives in a few short years.

‘Interesting that Russia chose 8-8-08’

Why, what’s the significance of the date?

Georgians have some left over special arsenal from the Soviet days. I doubt the Russians will want to push this too far but perhaps the Russians feel it’s worth it no matter what.

I think both the SU-25 FrogFoot and the SU-24 Fencer have been highly modernized.
