100 tanks heading for the capital.
Of course China will denounce the human rights violations of Russia and demand it stop oppressing its ethnic minorities like Ossetia and assert that Putin should respect the rights of Georgia, as an independent state. (Tibet?)
Didn’t Georgia become a NATO member???
If so, and Russia has declared war, NATO is going to be put to the test. The real deal test...
Thanks for posting this. This has apparently been going on for years.
“Voice of America: Georgian Forces Attack South Ossetia
Georgian military forces have fought their way into the capital of the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said Friday he had ordered an all-out offensive to regain control of the breakaway area.
Russian “peacekeeping” troops are in Ossetia. Georgia accuses them of aiding the rebels. Looks like combat might soon or already be happening between Georgian and Russian ground forces.”
Make that 100 Russian tanks heading for the capital.
Not unlike World War I...
Actually... most of those guys retired or went back to Mongolia.
The rest went to Kazakhstan. I don’t think the Russians even have those unit numbers in their TOE any more.
“Russian gear just *isnt* as good as Western counterparts, even their front-line stuff.”
\With the possible exception of the AK47
I hope that’s true.
It’s a matter of numbers. I don’t think the Georgians can hold out against the numbers the Russians can throw, and the Russians have been looking for an excuse ever since they didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory with Chechnya. That, and the dismal public failure of several weapons systems they were counting on for export, means that Russia was looking for something to polish the medals with.
Okay, they are not a NATO member. They wanted to join.
Yes, this type of activity is why we built a Strategic Oil Reserve. Hopefully, we may never have to use it, and to waste it foolishly for politics is silly, and yet that is what the current majority party wants offer as a solution for a crises that shouldn’t be. We have the ability to drill our way out of this as a temporary solution, until those scifi replacements for oil become available...
There are very few Mooselimbs in S. Ossetia. These people are of Iranian extract but they are mostly Orthodox Christians. There are some Sunni in the area but not part of this cluster frack.
This is about territory and two different ethnic peoples. The Georgians are Caucasian. The people in S. Ossetia want their own place or to be with Russia.
There is also a big pipeline that runs through this area to the Black Sea.
bttt
Can’t wait for the Annointed One’s solution.
Well, anything above simple machining. They make pretty reliable (if not terribly accurate) rifles.
Their electronics, as I’ve found out to my dismay over and over with getting AK accessories, run the gamut from awful to suspicious. I had one of their takes on a red dot sight set itself on fire last year.
Having seen the Dragon and TOW demonstrated, I think the Russians just stuck their hand in the blender. It remains to be seen if they will pull it out in pain or shove it in harder to stop the blades.
Why would the Turks want to come in and help the Georgians?
Has the “Chosen one” chimed in yet? Asking for whirled peas?
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for...
