Thank you. I’m sure it will be over soon. I just hate being “down” with anything ;-) ha ha. I’m the energizer bunny and it’s crampin’ my style! ;-)

Whew! Finally made it! Great pictures of GW in Thailand!

I hope he had a good time....and hope he has no problems
while in China. That leg of the trip has me a bit nervous!

They’ve already refused to let the WH press off the plane...wait!
That might be a GOOD idea! :D

Also I would say our senior politicians tend to be younger than yours in Britain Obama would not be considered that young, inexperienced but not that young.

My guess as to the reason is that your parliamentary system doesn't easily lend itself to having politicians stay in office 4 or even 5+ decades like our congressional elections do. It's one of the things I like about your electoral system as opposed to our own. I prefer fairly frequent turnover in our senators and representatives, but they tend to hang on almost until the day they're planted 6 feet under. In some cases, I'd almost bet that certain individuals have stayed on even past that day. ;-)

It will be interesting to see what kind of photos we get out of the Olympics.

It was such a hoot about the WH Press being held up for 3 hours. They made them sit in the plane while they went through their luggage! They usually get prima donna treatment not having to go through customs and if their baggage is inspected, they don't hold them up but send the baggage to the hotel later.

Kind of put them in their place for a change, huh! LOL!

Yes with our system many of the older members go to the House of Lords after their Parliamentary careers are over hence why sometimes the debates on certain issues can be better in the Lords than in the commons.

Our MPs normally loose their position in the Cabinet or shadow cabinet when the leader changes and then they either disappear to the back benches or decide to retire at the next election seeing that they are now never likely to progress further in parliament if the new leader does not favour them.

As you point out our system does not really lend itself for people to remain for decades though some do but they do not have any real influence apart from a speech here and there that may make the evening news because in reality our back benches cannot really influence policy or bring any legalisation before the house. We do have private members bills but they rarely get as far as a reading let alone getting passed and onto the statute book.

BUSH HATRED: THE SEQUEL
By Mark Goldblatt
Published 8/7/2008 12:07:44 AM

With the prospect of a decent outcome in Iraq — perhaps even the first liberal democracy in the Muslim world — looming ever more likely, Bush-haters have lately begun to argue that the eight-year presidency of George W. Bush must be considered a moral abomination regardless because the conduct of the war on terror has undermined America’s core principles.

. . . HERE’S THE TRUTH they cannot grasp: Like every war before it, the war on terror (or, to call it what it is, the war against totalitarian Islam) is a nasty, brutish endeavor. It is fraught with obscene excesses and squalid idiocies because, like every war before it, it looses the primordial evils of tribalism and bloodlust to which the human race, even at its current stage of evolution, remains heir. No technological advantage can render war antiseptic. No moral high ground can render it glorious. War is always wrong. Which is why its only justification is the conviction that by going to war you’re avoiding an even greater wrong down the road.

President Bush felt that conviction, and he acted on it.

If Iraq stabilizes anytime soon, and provides a liberal democratic exemplar that inspires the Muslim Middle East out of the Dark Age in which it has wallowed the last millennium, Bush will eventually be ranked with Lincoln and Roosevelt among our greatest presidents — for the very reason that he championed American values.

Bush-haters, in turn, will join the long ranks of history’s laughingstocks.

BUSH DEDICATES NEW MASSIVE US EMBASSY IN BEIJING
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: August 7, 2008
Filed at 10:08 p.m. ET

BEIJING (AP) — President Bush dedicated a massive new $434 million U.S. embassy in Beijing on Friday, calling it a symbol of deepening ties between the two trading partners and sometimes political rivals.

. . . The president attended the dedication of the embassy with his father, former President George H.W. Bush, who in the 1970s served as chief of the U.S. liaison office during a critical period when the United States was renewing ties with China. Also in attendance was Henry Kissinger, who was secretary of state during the Nixon presidency when the U.S. began a relationship with China.

The former president reminisced about his days in the city, then called Peking, when a young George W. Bush rode a bicycle around the city.

Thank you both for all your work on the dose tonight. There were some great pictures. I especially like that last one of Laura and Barbara on the plane. The lighting is striking.

Thanks for your comment. The fact that the Bush gals are very photogenic also helps for a great photo!
