Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has seen his lead in Massachusetts and across the nation slip precipitously over the past few months, especially with older, more experienced, voters.
In June, Obama was ahead of Republican candidate John McCain by 23 percentage points, but this summer, Obama has been virtually bleeding support in the Bay State. He now leads McCain by only 9 percentage points here.
Nationally, Obama's lead varies on an almost daily basis. In recent days, he has been tied with McCain, ahead by 3 points and ahead by 1 point.
The fluctuating numbers come on the heels of Obama's much-publicized Middle Eastern and European tour, during which he was treated as visiting royalty by most officials while he made the mistake of portraying a potential president as a monarchist. The trip did help Obama's lead, but it didn't last long, particularly once McCain began a weeklong attack on the Democrat's so-called celebrity status. The McCain campaign ran an advertisement comparing Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. It appears to have hit home with some voters.
But the roller-coaster numbers aren't due only to McCain's ads.
They are also directly related to Obama's roller-coaster positions on issues.
In recent weeks, Obama has changed his positions almost as often as he changes his designer suits.
He has switched his stance on oil drilling, suddenly deciding he would be open to limited proposals for offshore drilling. He recently declared he would be willing, after all, to tap the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserves to lower the price of gasoline. And he has altered his position on withdrawing from Iraq, saying he will listen to advice from ground commanders. Frankly, the Democratic candidate's flip-flops are starting to give voters whiplash. They can't snap their heads back and forth as quickly as Obama can change his stances on crucial issues. But voters' pain may prove to be Obama's loss, if recent polls are any gauge of public opinion.
It takes a lot more than a good campaign slogan and a smooth speaking style to win the presidency. Obama may well learn that lesson the hard way.
Thanks so much Phil! I spent a lot of time on that silly gif!
He’s all of that.
And he can make it down the chimney because he'll ban wood burning fires.
But if we give him Oreos and milk, that'll be racist.
Maybe a waffle.
LOL. I think you’re right! Forgot all that. I’m on my laptop or I’d post my ‘dancing waffle’ to you, heh.
Obama is going to have a horrible time after the convention. That is probably the last time he will lead this race. I doubt McCain will win in places like Massachusetts but it is possible. The North East has been rumbling. Now that most of the Rhinos have fallen out the Democrats are being left with full responsibility for a lot of budget messes. Rhode Island for example is going through major budget cuts because even the Democrats agree that raising taxes will not work.
Brilliant graphics, potlatch!
Thank you so much nit. I needed that after all my work, lol. Sorry I’m behind on letters. Need to get to sleep and meant to way earlier. Tomorrow!
Massachusetts is in play? I'm stuned!
“You know the kicks just keep getting harder to find” By Paul Revere and the Raiders. :-O
Maybe in those other 7 states he talks about.
All I hear on TV is how dynamic, intelligent and handsome (?) Obama is. Wouldn't he sweep the floor with old boring McCain? I'm starting to think not.
“McCain ought to opt out of the Big Three debates, as they will surely be rigged against him, insisting instead that brocco meet him in the town hall format, as originally agreed. If the messiah refuses, McCain can go ahead and debate the empty chair (with, as some have suggested, an empty suit draped over it).”
That is a super idea! Just don’t think McCain will do it but sure wish he would! There certainly is video of Obama saying he would do “as many town halls as possible” and then video of him saying he agrees to three debates, not town hall debates. A perfect opportunity for McCain to do as you suggested!
