Anti-smog pellets fired into the sky over Beijing clear the air ... as scientists warn athletes may be injecting 'super DNA'

Beijing was finally experiencing clear skies today after city authorities apparently used seeding technology to disperse the smog.

The report came as a strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the western Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Gansu today, near the site of May's devastating quake that killed at least 70,000 people, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the 6.0-magnitude quake, whose epicentre was 1,253 km (778 miles) southwest of Beijing. The magnitude of May's quake was 7.9.

A shallow quake of today's magnitude is capable of significant property damage.

In the meantime, Olympic chiefs remained more concerned with smog, fearing the high level of pollution, which is 10 times that in London, would cast a pall over the Games.

British athletes have been training in anti-smog masks. Poor conditions pose the greatest risk to endurance athletes....

...This month's Games are believed to feature a new generation of "genetically modified" athletes whose performance has been improved by the injection of foreign DNA.

A DNA helix. Gene doping is
said to be the next 'major
headache' for the world of sport

It could be the first Olympics to be tainted by "gene doping", the latest and most dangerous threat to drug-free sport.

It is beyond me why anyone would spend more than a fleeting moment thinking about the "Olympics".

It can't be only me, can it?

I haven't considered the "Olympics" anything more than a testing ground for enhancement producing drugs since the sixties, though I tuned in occasionally to see the bobsledders try and survive their runs.

The Olympics...

Performance-Enhancing Drugs
Gene Doping
Steroid Abuse
Political Manipulation by Tyrant Regimes
Billions of Dollars Wasted
Judging Scandals
International Jingoism
Abuse of Athletes by Tyrant Regimes
Injury and Premature Death of Abused Athletes

So, why are we participating in this nonsense?

I like the winter version as opposed to the summer. I don’t know why, just seems more entertaining. I guess there is less goofy odd ball “sports” in the Winter Olympics.

Who knows what they’re putting in the air to “clear” it up... And I doubt they care as long as it looks good... I wouldn’t want to be breathing it...

In most countries it is used as an excuse to plunder the taxpayers and enrich the bank accounts of the organizers and their well connected political friends. This was certainly the case when "Atlanta" hosted the olympics in 1996. Some of the local politicians and bureaucrats got a pretty good slice of the pie. And in spite of false claims to the contrary quite a bit of taxpayer money was consumed in things like police activities, etc.

Since China already pretty much doesn't need any excuse to loot it's citizens' wealth, I wonder what's in it for them.

Goofy and oddball? You ever run a downhill course at only 75% speed and find you were still going well over 60 mph on the radar gun? Then take a hard run and find out you were going over 80? Snow sports are GREAT!

It is a little more dangerous than the off chance of dropping a shotput ball on your foot!

The Olympics is war without people getting killed or infrastructure being destroyed.

IMO, that’s why we compete.

People are killed. Infrastructure is destroyed. The bad guys win.

What if they gave this "war", and nobody came?

I too am so over the Olympics.

The day when they meant personal accomplishment and legitimate national pride are over, long ago.

Now I see nothing but corruption and grasping.

I wonder what a gold medal is “worth” these days in terms of endorsements? Certainly not nearly as much as it was in previous years, at least not in the U.S.

I don’t know.

Further, how will we ever extricate ourselves from these “games”?

How will the Olympics ever pass quietly into history, as they should?

No doubt the U.S. gives a ton of money, in various ways, to support the IOC, and would have a hard time stopping for p.r. purposes. But this needs to end.

" ... plunder the taxpayers and enrich the bank accounts of the organizers and their well connected political friends ..."

And we mustn't forget the all important job creation for all of the cronies of the above, including TV, and down to "T" shirt vendors.

The Olympics industry is, no doubt, larger than most countries GNP.

When this one is completed, they will immediately start on the next one in London.

It is, after all, for the peoples.

Reminds me of the SNL skit at the All drugs Olympics where the big Russian goes for a 1500lb clean and jerk and rips his arms off. hehe.

I am amazed that the Olympic Movement survived Hitler’s 1936 Berlin Nazi Showcase. If there was ever a demonstration of the evil of the Olympics, that was it.

How many of these athletes are discarded after the Olympic glory has faded.

Even worse, how many other lives were destroyed, but they never even made it to competition because they were just not good enough.

BTW, did you know that Houston Rockets Center Yao Ming’s parents were strangers when they were ordered by the People’s Liberation Army to mate and produce children because they were both unusually tall? How many stories are there like that in China as they prepare for these “glorious games”?
