Iran Threatens To Shut Straits of Hormuz

WASHINGTON—Two days after a diplomatic deadline has passed for Iran to enter negotiations with the world's great powers and end the reprocessing and enrichment of uranium, the chief of the country's Revolutionary Guard Corps is threatening to close down one of the world's most critical oil chokepoints, the Straits of Hormuz.

Speaking to Iranian reporters after testing a new anti-ship missile, Mohammad Ali Jafari said it could sink "enemy ships" at a range of more than 200 miles, and that shutting down the Straits of Hormuz would be easy.

"Enemies know that we are easily able to block the Straits of Hormuz for unlimited period," Iran's official news service quoted Mr. Jafari as saying.

Well, that's not the real answer, though.

The water is where the water is.

It's supposed to be international waters, and if it takes the USN and the USAF combined to make it so, then so be it, but that's the way it should be.

“Is there some silly reason why a canal cannot be dug here?...........”

In the early days of the atomic bomb, it was proposed that canals could be dug using atomic bombs. Works for me!

I asked the same question a while back.

Turns out that peninsula is the site of a rather large mountain range.

The United States Navy could sink the Iranian Navy by tomorrow morning if our Commander-in-Chief were to simply give the word.

The little Persian pricks are begging for a smackdown, I’m hoping there is still enough testosterone at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to git ‘er done.

Just trying to see if they can get oil back up to $140 or more per barrel

Exactly. This is simple economics - in Ahmanutjob's eyes, the price of crude has dropped far enough. Time to reverse the trend.

Or a pipeline. It makes sense to me to put in a pipeline from Saudi and the emirates through to the Oman east coast. That would make it possible to ship oil right past Hormuz.

Granted, it would have to be a big pipe, but it could be worth it.

BTW, Nancy... This is why we have a Strategic Petroleum Reserve... It's strategic!

LOL! Nancy is more concerned about the gays of San Francisco than the Straits of Hormuz.

I seem to recall seeing flower throwing crowds on TV sending off Khomeni at the Paris airport a few decades ago.

Iran holds a pistol to their own heads and threaten to pull the trigger.

The reality is exactly the reverse. Given any trouble at all from Iran we can and should close Hormuz to Iranian traffic, while escorting all non-Iranian traffic safely through.

The price of oil would immediately shoot right up to $200, but Iran wouldn’t see a nickel of it; all of it would go to their enemies.

Since Iran is completely dependent on oil exports for their national income, and dependent on gasoline imports as well, they would not last two weeks.

Seriously, at the least excuse we should pull the trigger, close Hormuz until the current government falls. We should start “inspecting” every Iran-bound ship and letting them stack up out into the Indian Ocean; when Ahmadinejad exits the palace and goes into early retirement, we starting letting them go on their way.

Yeah, I remember that too. At the time, I had met some of the Iranian “students” in the USA, and I knew the flowers were actually excrement heading in the direction of the nearest fan. Boy, was I proved correct!

Is there some silly reason why a canal cannot be dug here?........

A canal could be dug to bypass the Straits of Hormuz.

However, it's simply easier, far cheaper and very much faster to just blow the Iranians out of the water in one afternoon.
