Hewing to campaign conventions, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) today visited a local pastry shop here, praised his fellow Republican officeholders and declared Florida is "a battleground state" in the election.
McCain entered Pancho's Spanish Bakery & Deli in Orlando this afternoon along with his wife Cindy, Florida GOP Gov. Charlie Crist and Orange County mayor Richard Crotty (R). They all shook hands with many patrons and a few employees. There was scattered applause.
"Thank you," McCain said. "We have the mayor and the governor, how about that?"
Upon seeing Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), who was seated at a table, rise up, McCain hailed him as "our greatest senator in all of the history of the United States."
Not all was picturesque, however, in today's photo-op. Outside the bakery, across the street there was a single protester holding a handmade sign. Bob Monyah, who called himself "Bob the illegal alien hunter," held a sign with phrases on it including "McCain Treason 4 Amnesty Sell Out USA Workers" as he cried out, "Stop the treason of U.S. jobs by illegal aliens!"

Well, at least he didn't claim it was Teddy Kennedy.

Guess I'll have to put another mark in the STUPID column of my McCain balance sheet.
From another article posted today about Medicare fraud in Florida by mostly Cuban immigrants:
“U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Florida, who filed legislation in June to combat healthcare fraud, said he didn’t think Medicare corruption was strictly a ‘’Cuban issue.’’ But he said the high number of Cuban immigrants charged in South Florida ``is not honoring the heritage of the Cuban people who have done so much for this community and for this country.’’”

“Guess I’ll have to put another mark in the STUPID column of my McCain balance sheet.”
C’mon, give him a break for that nice, small talk/complement. I once had a CO (BrigGen Vincente Blas...who hailed from Guam!) who called me the ‘best Marine Lance Corporal this side of the Mississippi.’ I didn’t think much about it, but this is how military men talk. They prop you up whenever they can with these kinds of complements. Means nothing, yes, but for the listener, it gives you a good feel about the complementer’s positive attitude. Notice how he did that for Nancy Palooka when he was being interviewed in San Francsico, her turf.
After McCain, of course. ;-)
I wonder if everyone recalls how upset we’ve all been with Martinez.

Oops, sorry.
Typo twice: compliment, not complement.
“Upon seeing Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), who was seated at a table, rise up, McCain hailed him as ‘our greatest senator in all of the history of the United States.’”
LOL! Wonder what Lindsay and Joe thought of that.
I remember that and lots of things:

Choice of Martinez sparks GOP rebellion
Rebellion is brewing among conservatives on the Republican National Committee over President’s Bush’s attempt to “impose” Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida as “general chairman” of the party, who favors “amnesty” for illegal aliens.

Republican National Committee Chairman Sen. Mel Martinez rejected the claim that the new immigration bill will anger conservatives and destroy the GOP’s chances to win in the 2008 election. On CNN’s Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer Sunday, Martinez said immigration “could be the saving of the Republican Party, frankly. And to do nothing would be the wrong thing for the American people.” Martinez is optimistic that the controversial legislation will make it through Congress, and he is counting on President Bush “to get us over the finish line.”

Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, the first Cuban-American elected to the U.S. Senate, on Wednesday apparently marked another first: delivering the first Spanish speech on the Senate floor. Martinez, a Republican from Orlando, was speaking in favor of President Bush’s nomination of White House counsel Alberto Gonzales as the new U.S. attorney general.

Martinez: Open the presidency to immigrants
Florida’s Republican Sen. Mel Martinez wouldn’t mind seeing the U.S. Constitution amended so that foreign-born citizens could serve as president
“Guess Ill have to put another mark in the STUPID column of my McCain balance sheet.”
So he should have said to a crowd of hispanics about a hispanic senator, “Martinez is as dumb as wood. The worst Senator ever to pollute this country.”
It’s the political stump, give him a break. He is going to go to Harlem and say Rangel is the next coming of Christ if it will get him votes.
I agree.
It’s really dumb and impolite to say outright what you think about someone whose support you are courting.
I don’t agree with McCain on a whole lot of issues. If he does what some of you are suggesting here, he might as well hire Obama’s campaign manager to moonlight for him. Really stupid.
I have to gently disagree. A an absolute statement like "Our greatest senator in all of the history of the United States" is over the top. In a public forum I'd expect something more like "a great American senator" or the like. Still hyperbolic when applied to a mediocrity like Martinez but it doesn't make McCain look ignorant.
” If he does what some of you are suggesting here, he might as well hire Obamas campaign manager to moonlight for him. Really stupid.”
Give him a chance. Once he wins the election I am sure he will hire Obamas campaign manager to run his office of communications.

Best summary of the McCain campaign I've seen yet. Very pithy.
You know that but the civilians of the likely voter world do not know this.
Martinez is soundly despized for his pro-amnesty stand. (seriously he blew off a FL Bar convention to play gold and attend a pro-amnesty group of elected officials convention in Orlando where the bar convention was)
McCain needs to deal with his fatal immigration amnesty stance.
