suddenly popular Classic Sirloin — at 290 calories, it was one of the lowest calorie items on the menu

Unless you eat some complex carbs along with it... I think the "sirloin" will just sit and rot in your intestines...

Too much infomation?

I have been trying to drop about 15 pounds and get in shape. Why is it that I am sympathetic to this?

I have no problem with this. Full disclosure. Now let’s mandate country-of-origin labels on ALL food. Not just fish.

They should also post information about how much calories are burned by the simple act of walking or jogging.

Stupid liberals.

I have no problem with this at all. As a matter of fact, this should be done everywhere. Disclosure is the conservative solution to this problem. The liberal tact would be mandate low calorie items on the menu. Every diner deserves to know what he/she is eating.

I'll take:

BK Whopper w/cheese 770
Large fries 500
Medium diet Coke 0 (have to cut back somewhere)

Total 1270 calories

... post the calorie count of each food in the same size and font as the price ...

I think it's an excellent idea for restaurants to provide that information, in fact I often choose Subway because they provide that information voluntarily, but I can't imagine what makes the city think they have a right to order restaurateurs (the owners of private property) to comply - except the typical politician's inflated sense of self-importance. I'd love to see all of NYC's restaurants follow the letter of the law in a manner that would give the do-gooders a heart attack faster than an oversized plate of Fettucini Alfredo. Quite a few high end restaurants have menus with no prices listed, and I would cheer if the rest deleted their prices and added a note: "prices removed to comply with the meddling of Section 81.50 of the New York City Health Code." If neither the price nor the calories are listed, then a lawyer could reasonably argue that the letter of the law has been followed. No doubt the restaurants would eventually lose, since you can't fight City Hall, but they'd have a good time playing with the regulators.

...barely able to find a meal under 1,000 calories

We live in an INFORMATION AGE. That said the idiots in charge cannot interpret IMPORTANT and BASIC information. The impotent morons can only pass stupid laws overwhelming a rotten bureaucratic system. I DON’T CARE ABOUT CALORIES, I WANT TO KNOW THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN OF WHAT I AM EATING.

I don’t want it mandated, but I sure would appreciate it if every restaurant put the cals and fat next to each item right there on the menu.

I am so glad that I don’t have to worry about calories and never will (it’s in the genes) and have to put up with ridiculous laws such as this. I do, however, have to watch cholesterol, as does everyone.

I went to the Chelsea last week to see Dark Knight. So many seemed shocked that a medium popcorn had 1,350 calories. My fave chocolate chip cookie at B&N has 450 calories.

While it’s nice to have calorie information with the meals, it’s not necessary if you have some basic knowledge about food and portion control. I don’t much care for government mandates like this one. I can look at a menu and have a pretty good idea of what not to order. Does it have a lot of cheese and sauces? Lots of refined carbs? Is it a huge slab of meat? I’ll also ask the server how big the meal is if I can’t tell from the menu or what I see other people being served.

Obesity Gov't police at it again.

Liberals hate the "evil multinational fast food chains". This will help to dramatically decrease their business.

The ought to force feed the stickers back down the city government’s throat. But then again in NYC a majority of voters like being told what to do and what to eat by their elected socialist it seems.

a law forcing chain restaurants to post the calorie count of each food

Notice that this law only applies to fast food/chain restaurants, not upscale restaurants frequented by wealthy NYC liberals.
