TransCanada gets Senate's OK (Alaska Gas Pipeline)

JUNEAU -- Gov. Sarah Palin's natural gas pipeline license won final legislative approval Friday, and an executive for the Canadian energy company that will hold the license said his firm aims to start work right away.

We are all smiles and we are full of gratitude for our good lawmakers making a very, very wise decision for Alaska," Palin said in her Capitol conference room packed with applauding aides and supporters.

After two hours of sometimes animated debate, the Senate voted 14-5 to pass House Bill 3001, which gives the Palin administration clearance to issue the license to TransCanada Corp. The Calgary-based company is one of North America's biggest operators of gas and oil pipelines.

The megaproject, if built, could cost more than $30 billion.

Yep. Just wondering how the U.S. gubbermunt enviro-weenies will worm their way into the middle of this and bring all progress grinding to a halt.

What is interesting about all this is that Alaska was brought into the Union fairly much because of its riches in natural resources (oil mainly) ... and now that those riches offer to pay dividends, Alaska becomes a "pristine parkland" which is not to be tampered with, not to be touched, nothing here folks except the beauty of nature ......

In some screwy way its almost like the 'guitar collector' Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap fame ... he 'collects' the best of the best guitars, but they can't be played ... EVER(!) ... not even looked at or pointed to, they just can't EVER be touched. They are museum pieces and thats all there is to it. /laughs

Good points - and there’s lots more to say to describe the utter derangement of Democrat/Green extremism on Alaska....

1) it’s not as though the area of drilling proposed poses ANY actual risk to ANY signicant piece of pristine wilderness land. The ‘Rats only show photos of places far removed from the barren, dull, uninspiring bit of 2,000 acres of mud flats that would be the actual location of the drilling. If enough of the public knew how completely barren and uninteresting and never visited this tiny sliver of ANWR is, they would not care a bit - GET THE DAMN OIL NOW!!

2) The way in which ANWR was created makes this ‘protection’ of a bit of the coastline a total crock — this area was supposed to still be available for oil and gas development — the libs greatly expanded the size of ANWR at the last moment but promised (sic) that it would not preclude oil and gas development. Total lie, as is so much that spews from the left. ANWR never would have been approved at its present (excessive) size and boundaries if Congressmorons at the time had understood that it would enable the left to block oil and gas development forever.

NOTHING is risked and NOTHING would be lost by drilling in this puny 2,000 acre sliver of ANWR. It’s not like there should even be a dilemma here — there is NO RISK to environmental values. It’s not a trade-off at all.

Except in the minds of demented green leftists and their puppets in Congress and the media.

Democrats will oppose this pipeline even as they try to pass laws mandating that Alaskan oil not be sold overseas.

Apparently the oil should be teleported directly from there to our local gas stations, having somehow magically refined itself along the way.

Been there, done that, bad idea.

That was the law when the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline was built. Basically useless since the largest importing market was also the closest, the West Coast.

But during upset condition this drove the oil price to ridiculously low prices on the West Coast. Which reduced the investment in the area.

See 1986 for the best example:

The ban was overturned in 1996. For a few years, about 6% of the oil was exported. Even though the ban no longer exists, since 2001 Alaskan North Slope oil has not been exported since the West Coast continues to need all it can get.

Yep. Clearly, it is the F.M. principle.

for not being from Alaska, you have a pretty good grip on the facts my FRiend! Allow me to make a slight adjustment to where they want to drill, ANWR wished it were a sliver of mud. It is just nasty tundra of the wettest kind, good for breeding mosquitos and other bugs.

From personal experience, I believe the caribou do so well in Prudhoe bay, and adjacent facilities is because of the oil industry. The pads that are there for production, give the caribou a chance to get away from the bugs, and someplace dry underfoot.

It has always been one of my dreams to take a group of envirowhacks to ANWR. Next, take all their clothes, leave them no bug dope, and see how they do for a week. Even the hardiest of envirowhacks (if they survived the bloodletting by bugs) would quit defending the end of the world and say DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW!

You should talk to some of the oldtimers that were here at statehood. I had a 94 year old neighbor, very sharp old german guy; set me straight on alot of things about Ak as he was here to see it, not read what was printed by the media that you all believe.

He claimed the feds wanted statehood more than Alaskans due to problems with lease/sale agreement with Russia coming to 100 year maturation of agreement. He told me that most Alaskans realized they had no economic base and would be taxed to death to support state govt. I know, sounds goofy, but this guy was highly respected in entire matsu, homesteaded his place in 42. Told me the feds shipped in all kinds of military personel, changed election requirements and thru election. Also said it didn't really matter as Alaskans are becomming more like socialist Americans everyday, no joke. He told me that would have never accepted what the govt pushed down their throats back before statehood. Somehow, I realize he's onto to something there.
