In major change, Obama says he'll support offshore drilling

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama Friday dropped his opposition to offshore oil drilling, saying he could go along with the idea if it was part of a broader energy package.

Obama made his comments in St. Petersburg during an interview with the Palm Beach Post. "My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," he said.

"If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done," the paper quoted Obama as saying.

The change is dramatic because Obama often pointed to his opposition to drilling as a key difference between himself and presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

"I will keep the moratorium in place and prevent oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts," Obama said in Florida in June.

Friday, he said he was still not a fan of drilling, telling the Palm Beach paper, "I think it's important for the American people to understand we're not going to drill our way out of this problem."

Obama also said, in a separate statement issued by his campaign, that he supported the bipartisan energy plan offered by 10 senators Friday.

"Like all compromises, it also includes steps that I haven't always supported," he said. "I remain skeptical that new offshore drilling will bring down gas prices in the short-term or significantly reduce our oil dependence in the long-term, though I do welcome the establishment of a process that will allow us to make future drilling decisions based on science and fact."

The proposal would end most of the ban on drilling. It would allow a 50-mile buffer...

Obama is shameless. Wasn't he recently quoted saying to the effect that he was happy with high gasoline prices, but that the prices became high too quickly?

Yes, Obama has flip-flopped. Too bad McCain has no standing to complain about it. That is what we get for nominating a Rino.

Who’s the campaign advisor for the GOP? A jellyfish? Where’s Karl Rove? If McCain wins, it’s just because Obama is an idiot (of which he really is...a narcissistic, delusional Muslim).

Smart move. I have as much regard for Obama as I do for a cat-box nugget, but at least he’s dealing with reality, as opposed to Pelosi and Reid. It’s is a step in the right direction. However, I will make damn sure everyone in my district votes this Empty Suit Loser into Oblivion. Now, McCain can propose ANWR drilling, as well, as part of an overall ernergy plan. In fact, if McCain had ANY sense, he would come up with a comprehensive plan along with the Pubbie Congress and then DEMAND a vote. Obama would be left with nothing but his d*ck in his hand. This is WAR people. Who wants the Saudis to be our reliable source for oil?

Oh yes obamas for drilling. The same way DC is for gun rights. Tie you all up with a million nonsensical rules that still don't allow you to do squat.

"Well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage......." That's code for "In your dreams I'm for drilling"

Dear mister hussein obama,

While you my not have the balls to be rigid concerning your energy policy, I am. I want frikken gasoline for my corvette. I don’t care if you get free energy from solar or wind or whatever, or unicorns from hope and change. I want 92 octane non-ethanol gasoline made from long dead plants and animals. It not only provides the “bang” when the spark plug fires, but also lubricates the upper cylinder walls.

Drilling is the solution. hoping for solutions acceptable to greenies that care so little about how they get to point A from point B that they will endure sitting next to a homeless drunk with body odor is not the solution.

I don’t want to ride a bus. People that ride busses are generally scumballs and believe it or not, I don’t fit in with that crowd mainly because I hate them for being a drag on what could be a superior society.

While it’s true your honest opinion on offshore drilling is utterly worthless, this thread gave me ample opportunity to say what I want and belittle you for being a nutless senator from a corrupt city in a corrupt state.

Go know yorself carnally, hussein obama... and maybe someday you can run for dog-catcher. Don’t expect my vote.

"Wasn't he recently quoted saying to the effect that he was happy with high gasoline prices, but that the prices became high too quickly?"

Actually, what he said was that the American people weren't upset at the high price of fuel, just that it had gone up so quickly.

Only difference is that he spoke for all of us instead of just himself.

I, and many others I'm sure, don't fall into the category of not being upset with fuel prices.

If McCain had any sense, or if his campaign adviser had sense, he would have turned his campaign plane in the direction of the nation's capital and joined the Republican congressman in the lobby (he can't go on the House floor) and call for an open vote. On the way he would have been in telephone contact with President Bush and arranged for Bush, in response to McCain's plea, to exercise his constitutional prerogative and call the Congress back into session.

McCain would have looked like a real winner, he might well have been able to claim that he single-handedly set in motion the events which led to offshore drilling and reduced pump prices. Instead, McCain, having been wrong about offshore drilling to begin with, having compounded the mistake with his remarks about drilling in the Grand Canyon, having failed to go far enough in reversing his position by continuing to exclude Anwar, now muffs the great chance of the campaign so far and perhaps of the whole campaign.

He’ll support drilling, just as long as the rigs are tuned up and their tires are properly inflated.
