McCain, Obama Tilt Over Taxes
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 1, 2008 | Laura Meckler

Sen. John McCain continues to slam rival Barack Obama for wanting to raise taxes on Social Security, even as he periodically explains that he might be willing to do the same.

At times the Republican presidential candidate leaves audiences thinking he won't raise taxes no matter what. At other times, he says all options are on the table and parties will have to work together to find a solution.

"I will not raise your taxes nor support a tax increase. I will not do it," Sen. McCain said Wednesday at a town hall meeting outside of Denver. He said Sen. Obama "wants to raise your taxes to pay for bigger government."

But that evening, at a fund-raiser in Kansas City, Mo., Sen. McCain said the matter has to be worked out with both parties. "In any negotiation that I might have, when I go in, my position will be that I am opposed to raising taxes," he said. "But we have to work together to save Social Security." That echoed comments to ABC News's "This Week" on Sunday when he said that "everything's on the table," including raising taxes.

Asked about the apparent conflict in Sen. McCain's position, spokesman Tucker Bounds said the senator "is running for president to make big changes and fix Social Security....Americans are looking for leadership that will make real change and not raise taxes."

Sen. Obama has said he plans to raise taxes on families earning more than $250,000, in an attempt to correct what he says is an imbalance created by the current administration where rich citizens have a smaller burden than poor ones.

Obama's Simplified Tax Plan

1. How much did you make last year?
2. Send it all in.

McCain again shoots himself in the... foot.

Last Sunday’s talk show appearance gave the Obama campaign all the ammunition they needed to shoot down any McCain “no new taxes” pledge.
They’ll probably run clips of George H.W.’s “read my lips!” speech...

McCain supports cap and trade. That will be the biggest tax increase in decades and send the US into oblivion.

Sad but true. Too bad that we don’t have a real choice but McCain is at least a choice.

I start my new job Monday. I am very excited. I’m leaving the salt mine and moving up to the sewer. It pays more and it is a much more pleasant environment.

At least we’ll have a seat at McCain’s table and influence over congress if we help them enough too. With Dumbama, we might get some snazzy rap tunes about crippling war heroes and Ludicrous could be appointed to the Supreme Court. Other than those dubious improvements, what’s to gain?

I know, I know.

Ah’ll vote for McRINO.

I just can’t get too excited about it.

Just need to make sure we get as many fence-sitters
out there and hold their nose the same as me and vote
for him.

“Ah’ll vote for McRINO. I just can’t get too excited about it.”

I hope McCain wins so that we can ‘torture’ him him with political action the entire time he’s in the white house. May he seek to leave after four years.

FRegards....
