SAN DIEGO -- (AP) - Navy officials say smoking appears to be the cause of a fire that caused $70 million in damage to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington.

The announcement Wednesday by the Navy came as Adm. Robert F. Willard, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, relieved the carrier's commanding officer and the executive officer of duty.

There is a reason why they pass the word when the “smoking lamp is lighted in all authorized spaces”.

In the Old Navy, the entire chain-of-command down to the Petty Officer in Charge of the compartment would be brought up on charges.

The smoker, if caught, would be court-martialed.

He’s going to be serving for quite some time to pay that back.

Ironically, on one sub I was on the smoking area was in the same location as the oxygen bleed nozzles.

Most likely outstanding officers that caught a very unfortunate break ... and have their Navy career terminated. Admiral rank officers (Navy or Coast Guard) and General grade officers in the Army, Air Force & Marine Corps in large measure attain their rank by sheer luck. Someone in your command on the way up f***'s up ... you're history.

Even in the New Navy, I’m sure this will be a career advancement ending process (at the very least) for many, all the way down the chain of command.

I just can’t imagine what will happen to the individual that caused the 70 million dollars worth of damages, if identified. ;-(

I took a look at the USS GW Home Page...It is all but blank. All “Leadership” info is gone, and the site has been scrubbed clean. Looks like a big deal.

Smoking in the paint locker. Some heads are going to roll over that.

Then again, back in the old days ......

Fleet Admiral Chester William Nimitz .... He then commanded USS Decatur and was court martialed for grounding her, an obstacle in his career which he overcame.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
