JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, facing corruption allegations and plummeting approval ratings, announced Wednesday he will resign in September. The move threw his country into political turmoil and raised doubts about progress for U.S.-backed Mideast peace efforts.
Appearing angry and reading from a prepared text, Olmert made the brief statement at his official Jerusalem residence where he harshly criticized the corruption investigations against him. He said he was choosing the public good over his personal justice.

Reagan for Prime Minister
What a year so far!
Livni is worse than Olmert, but the last polls only showed her 2 points ahead of Mofaz for the September primary. The Israeli press is hyping Livni (as the far left candidate), but there is a good chance Mofaz will win.

I think I have every right to interject my opinion, insofar as I don’t make ignorant, uninformed, statements. Every citizen of every other country seems to habitually bloviate about mine.
However, I don’t know who would make a good PM for Israel. I like Bibi. He seems smart, competent, and conservative. I also know he fell into the pali-kissing habit when he was PM and that he’s a flawed candidate.
I don’t know who could be Israel’s savior now. I rather suspect it is much as it is here — there is no political savior on the horizon, but better a McCain than an Obama.
I think we all need a savior, but not one who is of this world.
There is a point difference between Shaul Mofuz (sp) and Livni. If Mofuz gets in, he'll need Bibi.
Should have happened a long time ago. Maybe now Isreal will be able to stop playing the “Lap Dog”.

If you think Olmert was bad, wait until you meet Livni!
Let’s pray he is right on the second count!

It will not change the opinion of the world of Israel at all. My point of that, is that - Bush love Him or hate Him - America will be looked at the same . The world loves America. People who hate capitalism , Communist , Liberals, (Stri-zans) so called Greenies, they will always have a special hate for us. Be Proud of it !
I’ve met Zippi Lippi, acceding to be ushered in through the back door of meetings so she should not upset the sensibilities of the arab “gentlemen.” I don’t need to see her playing her PC games as Israel stands at the brink.
The move threw his country into political turmoil and raised doubts about progress for U.S.-backed Mideast peace efforts.I'm pretty sure there's rarely been a time that Israel hasn't been in political turmoil, but regardless, there has never been any doubt that progress for U.S.-backed Mideast peace efforts -- which in this case means, the ongoing genocide campaign directed against Israeli Jews and cruise ship passengers by Arabs -- wasn't possible.
