But what if that was just a pre-shock? I was gonna go for a 30 mile drive buy I may just stay home. The last serious one took out some freeways.

Glad you are safe.

Felt it up here in the desert. I heard something, felt a quick jolt, then heard my hanging pots & pans start to shimmy. Then the rocking and rolling started and the whole house creaked and moved. Nothing too bad, nothing broken. Made my heart race and shout out to the kids though. I’m about 10 miles south of Edwards AFB, 20 miles east of Lancaster.

Order:

1. Kids fine, so we talked about how it felt.

2. Husband happens to be home right now so that’s handy.

3. Turned on scanner. Nothing countywide that I heard.

4. Turned on tv. Tv is all over it, as expected.

5. Turned on computer to find FR thread. Didn’t have to search, already was pinged. :-)

6. Child is hiding from aftershocks under a laundry basket.

Al Gore will find a way to blame it on global warming.

Felt it very strong in my office, right outside the airport in Ontario. My friends in LA felt it as well. My wife called in from Redlands, and nothing was felt there.

Didn't think of that.

Can pre-shocks be as large as 5.0?

Pretty exciting here in Newport. Largest in a long time but didn’t feel any aftershocks here.

Glad everyone seems okay thus far.

Biggest jolt I’ve felt since the 2001 Nisqually Quake in Olympia.

I remember that one well. I was adjusting my stereo receiver when the quake first hit and thought "dang, the bass must be on 10; it's shaking the entire house!" So I turned the bass all the way down. ...and the shaking got more intense. (Finally figured out what as happening). Went outside and watched the trees sway.

Definitely in the top three biggest quakes I've ever felt, along with the '71 and '94 L.A. quakes.

I’m at the office in Kearny Mesa .. felt it here .. wasn’t too bad. One of my partners was in the loo ... the look on his face when he came out was priceless.

Felt it big time here in Santa Ana. My computer chair took me for a ride and the clock fell.

I have heard that the resevoirs recede immediately after a good quake, due to simutaneous flushing.

Things seem to be ok in Ontario, but phone lines are sketchy right now.
