Posted on 07/29/2008 11:43:21 AM PDT by ZGuy

An earthquake is now rocking the Southern California area. (I'm near Dodger Stadium)
As I post this, the USGS has not yet determined the epicenter so click on the link above for the exact location and magnitude from the USGS.

Here are the maps for California and Los Angeles:

I’m here in the S.F. Valley (LA). Northridge.

It was not a big deal, here. A small jolt - short pause - then a bit more rolling/shaking for a few more seconds.

Nothing like the Northridge quake. That was BAD.

Take care all,
4L

That's strange. I didn't feel a thing. No ground shaking. Nothing.

they are always complaining about money...and now that the press has encamped there for the afternoon, you will hear it ad naseum.

but no, the warning wouldnt have done anyone any good...not like the people in SF need to know something is coming.

I personally dont think an early warning system would work in LA.

1.) No one pays attn to the EAS warnings as it is. (Tsunami warnings included)

2.) You arent going to be able to broadcast 87 languages in a time effective manner.

3.) People are so dumb in LA, they will run outside and get hit by falling bricks and 97.9 La Raza billboards.

We are good. Thank you. My kiddos are a bit shook up, but it was a good dry run for what to do during a quake.

I hope the guys on that scaffolding are O.K.. There are a number of places you don’t want to be during a quake and that is one of them. Another off the top of my fear list is while in a dentist’s chair having work done (shivers).

8.0 and the dog wants you to move, right? ;-)

My dog (put to sleep a few years ago) used to sleep through most earthquakes. They didn't bug her. Fireworks and the dumb idiots who like shooting their guns on New Years Eve scared her a lot.

All excellent points. Plus today’s quake was so shallow, the warning and the quake would have arrived at the instruments at the same time. Won’t stop them from bellyaching about $ though.

Dang...you missed the fun by 3 weeks.:) A non-threatening quake like this one makes for a good story. Haven’t heard about any problems or damage in Temecula. Hope you have a good trip.

I was in Costa Mesa when Landers Hit, I was also up at the time, we thought that was it,Toast...

Ever been to Landers? My wife's father lives there on some property she was my GF at the time. She desperately tried to reach him for hours and actually made an operator cry on the phone.

Yep, you’re right. Both Holy Cross and Northridge are level 2 facilities. There’s only one level 1 hospital in the county (UCLA) and one level 1 Pediatric hospital (Childrens).
