Republican U.S. House of Representatives candidate Chris Lien visited several areas of Alaska last week including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
He went with six other House candidates: Luke Puckett of Indiana, Mike Sodrel of Indiana, Greg Goode of Indiana, Jason Chafets of Utah, Paul Stark of Wisconsin, and Craig Williams Pennsylvania.
I met with Lien at his campaign office in Rapid City yesterday where he showed me some of the pictures he took on the trip.
Several of those pictures are featured below because, as they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words." This is even more true of the oil issue in ANWR, since a lot of misinformation and misrepresentation is presented by opponents.
For more pics, see Dakota Voice.

Actually it looks like the big guy likes the shade from the pipes. Not a whole lot of stress there.

I’m sorry.
I tried to take a picture last January in ANWAR at the proposed drill site ....
And it was dark. Pitch black.
With nothing but ice, frozen mud, and flat, barren, sterile snowfields.
This could not be an axample of ANWAR. /sarchasm

Man-made structures are one of the very few things that protect the wildlife from the harsh weather.

I'll see your Caribou under an oil pipeline, and raise you a Møøse in a kiddie pool.

Shelter for animals is only postive if it is natural or made by unshowered college kid volunteers and falls down within a week because they were stoned when they built it.

These are actually columbs holding up the hotel where these guys were staying. The structures are built on these columbs to further reduce the footprint of the buildings.

And then there is this.
Oil exploration and transmission is not always pretty and there are mishaps such as the Exxon Valdez. The point is that it has to be done safely.

Furthermore, there is a species of particularly noxious fly that nests in the tundra. They burrow into animals like the caribou using eyes, ears, nose, any orifice available and lay their eggs. When hatched, the larvae chew their way out literally. I've seen the chewed hides. Caribou get up on the pediments of equipment like the pipeline. This is just high enough to get them off the tundra and out of range of the flies. HEALTHIER CARIBOU RESULT! THE HERDS THRIVE!

Extracting our own oil on our own land will be beneficial on so many levels, not the least of which is national security. Continuing to send our petrodollars to seventh century barbarians is as close to a suicide wish as we can imagine.
