I believe only after the convening authority for his court martial reviews the conviction and sentence. That would, in his case, be the nearest commanding general officer (his division or base or whatever major command has general court martial convening authority).

Gray had been convicted in connection with a spree of four murders and eight rapes in the Fayetteville, N.C., area over eight months in the late 1980s while stationed at Fort Bragg.

Let justice prevail. The crime fits the punishment.

Headline “Bush approves execution” seems to have been manipulated by an AP writer who doesn’t like Bush and is against capital punishment. I think the normal wording is that Bush decided not to intervene in the sentence.

Because it’s not the movies.

No. Really?       ;^)

We had a second class PO get booted from our ship in Subic Bay in the Philippines, and his rate and awards were stripped at sentencing before he was sent ashore to the base brig and transfer to CONUS. I just thought that was standard for a felony or dishonourable discharge. Of course, that was also during the 60's, and the rules have been wussified since! ;^)

As a former resident of Fort Bragg (1974-1979), I say “good riddance”.

Is that the guy who threw the grenade into one of his own unit’s tents?

Yes. The Black Muslim Sergeant who fragged the C&C the night before the kickoff. Idaho lost its first in the war that night.

The POS should have been summarily executed on the battlefield as far as I am concerned.

In cases of military executions the President as Commander in Chief has to okay all death sentences before they can be carried out.

” A person of color.” yeah, Army green. This guy was doing hate crimes, long before it became popular. Anger, rage and hatred is going to kill you one day, and his time among the living is up.

That evil Bush--killing an Army COOK!

Of course the gAyP article (and the article linked from Drudge) predictably excludes the victims and what Ronald A. Gray did to them.

Construction of a gallows is covered by a regulation, not a field manual?

Why wasn’t prosecuted by North Carolina civilian authorities? I thought the military generally ceded jurisdiction in these kind of cases.

Colonel, another article on this subject stated that the execution would be carried out by the US Bureau of Prisons. They use lethal injection.
