A Jerusalem lawyer petitioned the attorney general Sunday asking him to order a police investigation into the removal and subsequent publication of a personal note left in a crack of the Western Wall by U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama during his visit to Israel last week.

The presidential hopeful visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, at the end of a two-day visit to the region on Thursday. It is believed that requests written on notes and placed between the holy stones of the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, will be granted by God.

Attorney Shahar Alon asked attorney General Menachem Mazuz to launch an investigation against the editor of Israeli daily Ma'ariv, who published the content of the note last week. ...

(Next to last paragraph): Ma'ariv issued a response Sunday, saying that "Obama's note was published in Ma'ariv and other international publications following Obama's authorization to make the content of the note public. Obama submitted a copy of the note to media outlets when he left his hotel in Jerusalem. Moreover, since Obama is not Jewish, there is no violation of privacy as there would be for a Jewish person who places a note in the Western Wall."

As I noted previously about this, IMO, it was a setup from the beginning. Obama WANTED it tyo be published for the PR “value”.

As another poster has noted, this sounds a little too “Clintonian” for me. The Israelis DO NOT publish the content of notes left at the Western wall but, instead, respect the privacy and religious preferences of the individual leaving the prayer.

IOW, the whole thing looks like a fish, swims like a fish and SMELLS like a fish!!

I don’t know if it was before or after - I think it was before he went to the Wall, but if the note had already been published, why give the media a copy of the prayer?

If I were BHO, and heard my private prayer had been stolen, I would also have hastened to write down the prayer, copy it, and hand it out to the Press, to stop false stories about what was in the original prayer.

I agree it was an outrage to have hoisted his banner at the Wall, but I'm not sure from the photo how close it really was. I'd rather get the guy when he is provably wrong, and not get into crying "wolf".
