I have been in sackloth and ashes ever since the end of the Republican primary season dwelling on the mess we find ourselves in. Conservatives have watched the Republican nomination process get hijacked from them while they were debating whether our candidate should be socially conservative (Huckabee) vs economically conservative (Romney). Now we have McCain, who has historically proven to be mediocre at best on both sets of issues. His only strength was his view on the Iraq war.
Now that we appear to have turned the corner in Iraq, the whole withdrawal argument may be moot. If things continue this way, McCain will be reducing troop levels and bringing the home if elected president. So what is his candidacy about? If the Iraq war is basically won before the election, what is it that will define his candidacy?
Here's another question - who is McCain's base? Who will work the phones? Who will go door to door during the 72 hour GOTV? Who will organize and fund the 527 groups that can take shots at Obama that he can't (or won't) take himself, ala the Swiftboat Vets? More simply asked - who is passionate about McCain's candidacy?
The answer, to me is, nobody. Sure, a lot of us conservatives and disaffected union democrats will vote for McCain as the lesser of 2 evils, but who will "turn out" the voters? Who will sacrifice time from work and money from their budgets to see that he gets elected?
If I am right, I think that President Barack Hussein Obama will be in office come January, killing our way of life with an overwhelming Democrat Congress. Does anyone have a better answer?
Remember to rotate your Y2K stash.
His base should be anyone that doesn’t want obama to ruin the country like you said.
However, a lot of people aren’t concerned about that so much and just don’t care.
I still think Senator John McCain will win in a landslide this Fall: There are not enough blacks, college kids, latte liberals and far-left loons to get the job done for Senator Barack Obama.
Yep. I’ve seen a few life-long, Republican-hating Dems turn staunchly against their party and Obama in this election cycle. I never thought I’d see them entertain the idea of voting not just 3rd party, but Republican, yet they are. Its given me a lot of hope that maybe, just maybe, the Silent Majority is going to jump up and bite the Dems in the azz this fall for trying to foist this diehard socialist crap on America.
(A)None of the above?
(B)I give up!
I think the number of conservatives who are too cowardly or self-absorbed to vote for McCain is also diminishing significantly.
It would appear so. Sad, isn't it?
Although there are some who are passionate FOR McCain. Not necessarily conservatives but people that, for some unknown reason, think that McCain has a plan.
Obama has “cult like worship” from a large group of the democratic base (albeit, not all). They will work for him and his candidacy tirelessly because they “believe” in him (why, I don’t know).
The religious right felt that way about Bush in 2000 and 2004, giving passionate support in dollars, hours and votes in both elections. Who feels that way about McCain?
Seems like there is no remedy for this. McCain got the most votes. My guy (and probably yours) endorsed him. We can’t do the primaries over, who knows if we can even make closed primaries in the currently open primary states, by 2012.
If it were up to me we’d have stricter voter qualification too, and the military and overseas votes would be more carefully handled.
But if Obama gets in, all that becomes less likely to be accomplished.
I fear we are at a backs-to-the-wall moment and if we don’t manage to avoid an Obama presidency, we won’t have a Constitution in 2012.

“I believe you are right. Look for the GOP to trot out all kinds of scare tactics about Obama “
That’s SOP for the GOP. In fact, IMO it’s the only way they know how to campaign.
“McCains base consists primarily of moderate Republicans and Vets.”
And people who pull a straight republican ticket.
Obama isn't going to win. Obama should have a huge lead right now. Think about how much the environment favors him: gas prices, economic struggles and housing problems, months of fawning press coverage, a disgruntled GOP base, etc. Also remember that Dukakis had a huge lead of Bush I in the summer.
With all of these things, Obama has a smallish lead, even with the temporary Euro bump. People don't like him and they don't trust him. That's death at the voting booth.
Now as for McCain - well as we all know, it isn't pretty for the base. Fear of Obama is his greatest asset. But he has the energy issue in his favor, which will have a huge effect on the election. He's also backed away from his cap and trade and climate change nonsense, and he's been making good noises about balanced budgets.
Also, now that he's polling so badly with hispanics it will be interesting to see if he changes his tune at all on border issues - not likely IMO.
Just this morning I heard McCain boasting about his bipartisanship and how well he works with Democrats to get things done.
He's not going to do right by us. The man who worked so hard to get CFR done, and to get "all God's children" amnesty, is not going to pick a conservative running mate.
“We Suck Less” - a very sad platform, but I believe a true one.
Yep. Its turning into a massive, organized movement in the Dem party against him.
If the reports are true that there are 2 million or more of those people affiliated with those sites (and undoubtedly many, many more that aren’t), and if they stay disciplined against him, I think Obama is going to be in deep, deep trouble when people go to the polls in November.
So disaffected democrats form the energized base for McCain? That’s a stretch
