Adventurer Steve Fossett 'may have faked his own death' Round-the-world flying adventurer Steve Fossett may have faked his own death, investigators have claimed. By Chris Irvine Last Updated: 12:22PM BST 27 Jul 2008 Fossett, a friend of Virgin boss Richard Branson, and the first man to fly non-stop round the earth in a hot air balloon, went missing last September when his final flight in a light plane over the Nevada desert went missing. However, Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Ryan of the US Civil Air Patrol has said Fossett, whose body or plane was never found, could still be alive. She said: "I've been doing this search and rescue for 14 years. Fossett should have been found. "It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

I’ve always thought they looked in the wrong area...

Lake Tahoe is just a few air miles from where he set off from.

It’s Big, it’s very deep, and the water is very cold.

Truly surprised they did not take a longer gander in that

direction!

People fake their deaths. Their wives collect. They get together in South America.

“I think it’s ridiculous to believe.”

Why? Fosset was fascinated with breaking nostalgic aviation records. For him to arrange for entering into mysterious flight history with the likes of Amelia Earhardt is highly plausible.

"How the hell do you hide an airplane in an area where you can either be picked up or walk out?"

Have you read "Unintended Consequences?"

"Unless his wife/heir was in on the plot, how could Fossett gain the $50,000,000?"

I know that this is going to sound cynical, but he could have structured a false debt (or many false debts) that she would have been forced to pay off.

3.Don’t beat up on yourself if you can’t find the vehicle; accept that the crash site may never be found until a later generation or never at all
AND
4. NEVER BE SUPRISED what you’ll find when climbing, hiking, or just walking or even relaxing.

Just look at all of the World War Two aircraft they continue to find to this day in the middle of Europe. JPAC is continuously making digs in France, Germany, Belgium, and Italy to recover the remains of American airmen. Look at the wreckage of United 93 on 9/11. The plane went straight in from only a few thousand feet up and formed an almost perfect crater. Now imagine a B-17 or B-24 coming straight down from five miles up and impacting in a forest or even a lake. With most of the men off fighting the war, there would not have been any hunters or foresters out in the woods for possibly several years, by which time the forest would have covered over the wreckage.

When my dad was stationed in Germany in the early 1980's, they were still finding WW2 tanks and trucks that had been knocked out up in the woods and simply abandoned to the elements.

And this lady thinks they have conducted a thorough search in less than a year. She is in major need of a reality check.

The first one is the one I was thinking of, I worked a couple of wells up in Pine Valley years ago, and a well over at Buck Station, but had seen the playa from up in the vicinity of Coffin Mountain. The playa is pretty obvious on google Earth, and watching the ground level readout shows a variation across it under 2 feet. It doesn't get much more flat than that except up by Wendover on the Salt.

I figured Fossett had the means to just trailer in whatever support he needed, from fuel to shop facilities to living quarters, without much trouble.

Thanks for confirming that that was the area he was looking at.

That playa over toward Austin doesn't look so bad either, and iirc, those are not the only ones in the area.

Frankly, I think the search has been centered in the wrong area from the get-go, unless he went down before he got that far.

A lot of wide open spaces punctuated by some incredibly rugged terrain...

Iirc, the plane Fossett was flying was fabric covered. Auger one in, have a fire and there isn't much left of the plane but a scorch mark, an engine, and some framework.

Something like that would be darned hard to spot from the air, and if in a draw, could be exceptionally difficult to see unless the light was perfect.

Frankly, it would take an exceptionally good crash landing to leave remnants which actually looked like what most people think of as a plane.

I wasn't looking for Miracles Still Happen. I was looking for Werner Herzog's Wings of Hope, which is also called Julianes Sturz in den Dschungel . What's really wild, is that the director of the movie was supposed to be on that flight, but missed out because the plane was full.

Not to be cynical, but did they already know these 6 other planes were at their final resting spots? If not, then they could have missed Fossett's plane as easily as you missed any of these six.
