French President Nicolas Sarkozy is offering Obama a warm welcome on the day of their meeting, in an interview with the conservative daily Le Figaro.
"Obama? He's my pal," the president told Le Figaro. "Unlike my diplomatic advisers, I never believed in Hillary Clinton's chances. I always said that Obama would be nominated."
Sarkozy added that an Obama victory "would validate" his strategy of reconcilation with the United States. His embrace of the United States has made him American conservatives' favorite Continental politician, but he doesn't seem to be reciprocating.
Meanwhile, the French press appears to be welcoming Obama Friday with some of the same excitement as the Germans Thursday. The cover of the liberal daily Liberation, above, says Obama showed in Berlin that he's presidential material, and the inside story headlines his appeal for unity.
One interesting detail from Le Figaro: The Obama-Sarkozy meeting will be conducted with a minimum of fuss, to mark it off clearly from the trappings of a presidential visit.
"Nicolas Sarkozy's advisers received only one demand from the team of the Democratic candidate: no American flag for the press conference, because it's a candidate being received, not the president of the United States."
LOL! He says his diplomatic advisers are idiots.
He didn’t finish...he said “He’s my Pal...estinian.”
Psst, Sarkozy - the man’s a Marxist Socialist.
So much puke out there and not enough buckets.
“...no American flag for the press conference, because it’s a candidate being received, not the president of the United States.”
Because the flag embarrasses Obama.
Laughable that anyone would see this divider as a “unifier.”
Clearly delusional.
Watching the press conference on CSPAN.. Barry seems to be wearing an American flag lapel pin. Guess his handlers got the message.
how much $$$ from Europians is in Obama’s coffers?
He can’t very well tell Ubama to go back to Mecca in public.
He’s a politician, they all have to be nice to Obanger.
It’s because Obama’s a better dresser than McCain.
1. Consider the source. I think Sarkozy is far too shrewd to have said this.
2. If he is that dumb, I hope we’ve a pic of the two in fond embrace as I doubt it’ll go over well here.
Agreed. People around here are over reacting. Sarkozy is only doing what any politician of a given country do vis a vis the opposition party of another country who he wants to keep as an ally. From Sarkozy's perspective he wants the USA to be his ally regardless if it's with a President McCain or President Obama. And that is a huge step forward from past French governments.
Even though Europe has “moved right”, no one should forget that they are moving right from Socialism. Which means they STILL have more in common with Obama and the Dems than conservatives.
The only exception would be a guy like Tony Blair who wants to fight terror, but on social issues? McCain looks like Newt Gingrich to those people, and there really are very few comparisons that are useful.
S..., and I had just ended my ban on drinking French wine when he was elected. Looks like it’s going to be back on.
Remind me again why this sh!tbird is prancing around the Middle East and Europe? He can stay there and the regressives in Eurabia can keep him.
Looks to me like Nicky's about ready to ask Obama on a date:
