In a surprising twist to a Johnson County murder that gained nationwide attention, Edwin Hall pleaded guilty this afternoon to killing Kelsey Smith.
Hall stood before Judge Peter Ruddick as he entered guilty pleas to charges of capital murder, aggravated kidnapping, rape and aggravated criminal sodomy.
For the murder charge, he faces life in prison with no chance of parole. For each of the other three counts, the range of punishment is 147 to 653 months.

“I’m sure the DA cleared the plea with them before finalizing the deal and I hope this brings closure for them”
Indications are that THAT is exactly what happened, and for THAT reason. Who would want to go through this nightmare again? They know he did it, he won’t get off, he’ll suffer the (next to) harshest punishment and they can sleep at night instead of wondering how things will turn out.
It was their decision as much as the DA’s.
what a beautiful girl she was! That idiot will rott in jail and I hope he dies there.
Go through it over and over again, because there would have been appeals. My daughter played at a memorial concert held for the Smith family and I saw how emotional that was for them. I can only imagine the hell they would go through with a trial. One of my co-worker's husband and grandaughter were killed by a hit and run while bicycling last year. Last week the guy who killed them was found not-guilty. I watched her go through the events leading up to the trial and how hard it was on her.
I don't think he's going to have an easy time of it in jail. Probably spend the rest of his life being some bad man's girlfriend.
Edwin Hall is a sicko and I hope he gets exactly what he has coming to him in prison.
His wife is also a sick person. How she can defend him and stand by his side is beyond me.
It is too bad that he has a little child. I feel very sorry for that little kid.
I heard discussed on a talk show last night about how he’ll receive “justice” in prison. His life will be short.
I think the locals here said he’d get put in segregated facilities and be kept apart from the other prisoners.
Guards have been known to turn their backs, forget to lock a door... etc...
