As proud Canadians we open our doors to people from all over the world. Honest, hard-working people. And sometimes, to those who are not. Therein lies the problem.
The Khadr family for example. The patriarch, Ahmed Khadr, immigrated to Canada in 1977.
He was an active terrorist and friend of Osama bin Laden. In the '90s Khadr was sent to a foreign prison for the blowing up an Egyptian embassy, but with the help of Jean Chretien he was brought back to Canada.
He reportedly applied for and received a Canadian disability pension and later returned to the Middle East along with his family and was killed in a gun battle in 2003. Ahmed's wife, Maha, is a terrorist sympathizer and together they spawned five children.
The youngest was wounded in the same battle that killed his father. Mom yarded him back to Canada so he could avail himself to the best of Canadian-style medical treatment.
Two other sons and a daughter all have apparently strong links to terrorist bodies.
The daughter shoots her mouth off on open-line shows and newscasts at every opportunity. Her terrorist sympathies appear obvious.
Omar, the second youngest, was captured as a teen terrorist. He's been hogging headlines all over as a newly released video from 2003 shows him being interviewed by CSIS and whining about losing his eyes and feet. Neither loss was fact.
Some Canadians actually get bent out of shape listening to the blubbering of five years ago.
They call CSIS agents -- who offer a Subway-type sandwich, potato chips and coca-cola -- thugs. Such misguided compassion dulls our lustre.
Of course the argument goes that Omar is a Canadian, born in Toronto. And that's the rub. Canada allowed this despicable family into the country. Allowed them to take advantage of all this country has to offer. Was idle while they involved themselves in terrorist causes. Welcomed them home when they got into terrorist-related jams abroad.
Showered them with medical care and then, like stooges, watched while they made Canada a laughing stock in terrorist circles around the world.
This family has continually taken advantage of Canadian generosity, and apathy, while disregarding the norms and mores of their adopted home. They spit on its values. And one of the results was the making of this child soldier, nabbed in Afghanistan after allegedly killing and wounding those who fight with Canadians. He now sits in Guantanamo Bay.
Politicians like Bob Rae say Omar Khadr isn't a threat. His lawyers say he has grown into a nice young man. Decent even.
Of course lawyers and politicians have a penchant for being more than a little loose with the truth. Still some Canadians are demanding his repatriation saying he should be tried in Canada. Yeah, right.
American military justice is not perfect. But Canada can't even deal with teenage car thieves and is no more capable of dealing with an alleged child-soldier-terrorist accused of a war crime halfway around the world than it is in dealing with the rest of his family.
Canadians are polarized on this one. Some see it as shame-on-Canada. Some see Bob Rae and this plague of compassion as a sick joke.
The debate provides fodder for comedy venues far and wide but I doubt our troops will find humour -- or pride -- in its sickness.

Oh Canada!
Hey, when you live through winters of 50 below (F), you don’t mince words.
the Khadr family didn’t make a laughingstock of Canada. the canadians did it all by themselves. Khadr is merely the symptom of the liberal disease.
OUCH. Great op-ed.
Don’t laugh too hard. Our own Lefists would have us doing similar things, if we gave them the chance.
I agree. but I really don’t think that we will learn until it is just about too late, it might be too late before the left figures out that our enemies hate us BECAUSE of the left, and that the left would be the first to go.
Canadians out-west have some nads. Unfortunately, Toronto is the home of Canada’s secular, politically-correct, left-wing morons, and they seem to own the media and the political debate.
I went to Mississauga, near Toronto, for business for a month back in 2006.
I would ask co-workers about this huge Mosque there and all these burka clad people running around.
Every one of them responded with curiosity why I would even ask. To them the muzzies were part of the landscape and "never bother anybody".
I would always answer that 19 muzzies "bothered" about 3000 people in the US in 2001. To that, the prevailing mood was that that happened in the US and it would never happen in Canada.
It wasn't 2 weeks after I left and came back to the States that a whole bunch of muzzies from that Mosque were arrested for conspiracy to blow up government buildings in Ottawa.

You don’t really need Leftists to do it: the US missed a beautiful chance to put the skids under Moussaoi and instead is now warehousing him at great expense for the rest of his unnatural life. His trial was a comedy act during which he played the court for monkeys.
The US even has the death penalty: so how did that happen?
Here's some interesting reading on the subject of the Law of War. Francis Lieber basically started modern law of warfare. He'd be appalled at what the USSC recently did.
Yep, our lefties are running roughshod over the country and have indeed made us a laughing stock. I try not to think of this Khadr family too much though, I despise them on so many levels, and it bothers me a great deal that they are in my land.
