WINNFIELD, LA. -- At 1:28 p.m. on Jan. 17, Baron "Scooter" Pikes was a healthy 21-year-old. By 2:07 p.m., he was dead.
What happened in the 39 minutes in between -- during which Pikes was handcuffed by police and shocked nine times with a Taser while reportedly pleading for mercy -- is spawning suspicions of a political cover-up in this lumber town infamous for backroom dealings.

But They need to ban these tasers and have federal standards for hiring police
Federal standards? Not NO, but HELL NO. You are actually suggesting that we keep growing the monstrosity that is the federal government in direct contrast to the US Constitution and the stated intentions of the Founders? What the hell kind of conservative are you?

You're absolutely right about that part, but suggesting that local police become the wards of the federal government is like telling the inmates to guard the armory at the maximum security penitentiary.

Were you not paying attention during Ruby Ridge and Waco? Or are you just very young and haven’t learned the history?

A conservative who thinks that we need to raise police standards in this country I agree with you 100%. The question is how, I for one think there should be federal standards for PROSECUTION and IMPRISONMENT for most police misconduct. If they actually sent some of these dirtbags to the clink for a few years for some of the stuff short of MURDER, maybe, just MAYBE we would have a lot less crap like this.

In the olden days the bad guys would just plain kill their opponents. Now it seems to be the cool thing to make it look like suicide, e.g., the two Spitzer madams, the two New York police guys. It all started with Vince Foster.

I've been accused on a another thread of being anti cop But They need to ban these tasers and have federal standards for hiring police
An emphatic "NO!" on banning of tasers. An emphatic "NO!" on federal standards for hiring of police officers.
I am sure that there are civil torts in LA law that covers the abuse of a citizen while under the color of legal authority. I am sure that there are laws against assault which leads to a death in LA.
The local citizens need to clean up their mess. Not rely of Big Brother to scold and spank the local authorities. A knee-jerk response is usually the worst response.

It happened outside, at a grocery store, with witnesses. He was tased twice while unconscious. Im pro-cop but this is abhorrent and, based on what Ive read, plain murder.
But it was done by a cop so nobody will go to jail.

**** What is with the cops and these things? ****
Most cops become cops for the right reasons, like to help and serve the community, and I knew many of those types on the Chicago PD.
Unfortunately, some are power mad control freak sadists, aka Jack Booted Thugs. They see the Badge as the ticket to Power over people, a 'get out of jail free card' for abuse, and I knew 'one' of those too (a real assh*le for sure).
In the olden days the sadists used their Batons to excess, now it's the Taser. So yeah, maybe Congress should look into this, way too many are dying from this "non lethal weapon". But they're too busy trying to impeach Bush.

Not long ago, there were posts here on FR claiming that there never had been, and could never be, a death attributed to a taser. This is the second account (if it is to be believed) of a death that I have read this week.

He was under police custody for 39 minutes and tased 9 times.
That is an average of once every 3 minutes.
Sure would wreck havoc on a persons pulmonary system.

A conservative who thinks that we need to raise police standards in this countryYou mean like they raised standards amongst those working airport security?
I understand your concerns, but federalizing police (which is where such a program would ultimately go) is not really a good idea.
