More than 100 members of Congress wrote President Bush today, urging him to "halt all action" on a proposal they argue would change the definition of abortion, and drastically limit women's access to birth control.
The Department of Health and Human Services draft proposal, which began circulating around Capitol Hill last week, would require hospitals receiving federal funds to certify that, in their hiring, they do not discriminate against people who refuse to provide forms of contraception, such as birth control pills, due to personal religious beliefs.
The proposal immediately incited an uproar among Democratic lawmakers led by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who have also written to Bush. Now, 104 members of the House of Representatives have sent the president a protest letter of their own.

President Bush rocks!
Let me see...is this legislating from the Executive branch? Hmmmm...where could he get an idea like that?
The... draft proposal... would require hospitals receiving federal funds to certify that, in their hiring, they do not discriminate against people who refuse to provide forms of contraception, such as birth control pills, due to personal religious beliefs.
I am not making the connection.
Abolish all federal involvement in the provision of healthcare.
Problem solved.
So, these members of Congress want to FORCE taxpayers who object to contraception to give money to hospitals that FORCE employees to distribute contraceptives.
I have an issue with the government stepping in and dictating the terms of an employment contract.
If it is a requirement of employment that a doctor offer certain services and he can't do so in good conscience, then he should not take the job. We've seen what happens when government steps into these things- Catholic Charities had to stop offering adoption services in Massachusetts because the state wanted to force them to offer adoptions to homosexuals.
This doesn’t say that they must hire a doctor into a position that must dispense birth control.
If the hospital doesn’t want the collar of federal regulation surrounding this rule, then it can stop taking federal dollars. This is a much better situation than what Catholic Charities had to work with.

...
“How DARE they curb our child sacrifices!!!”
Not bad, for a lame duck with a Democratic controlled Congress.
Tell the liberals to go pound sand. If they had their way, providers would be jailed for not providing contraceptives to pre-teens.
Only an American liberal could call the preservation of life a bad thing!
Many Americans believe artificial means of contraception are immoral and should be illegal, as they once were.
I doubt that "many" consists of more than a quarter of Americans, at most.
Obviously they are doing this to grandstand. Talk about being in the hip pocket of Planned Parenthood.
25% of 300 million is 75,000,000 Americans, and that's a whole bunch!
The Left is opposed to the gainful employment of Catholics and other Christian sects who are morally opposed to contraceptives, abortion, etc.?
Well, okay - the Left is welcome to propose that oil companies certify that they don’t discriminate against employing people who belong to radical environmentalist organizations opposed to the drilling and pumping of oil, and its consumption.
No wait, they’ve probably already done this.
Why does the Left want to kill babies so badly?

In progressive socialist Amerika, doctors are health care slaves, to be used as the government sees fit. They have no free will at all, no right to their own beliefs, and no authority to refuse anything the government mandates.
