"(CNN) -- Italian newspapers, an archbishop and civil liberties campaigners expressed shock and revulsion on Monday after photographs were published of sunbathers apparently enjoying a day at the beach just meters from where the bodies of two drowned Romany gypsy girls were laid out on the sand."
"Two of them were pulled to safety but rescuers failed to reach the other two in time to save them.
The Web site of the Archbishop of Naples said the girls were cousins named Violetta and Cristina, aged 12 and 13.
Their bodies were eventually laid out on the sand under beach towels to await collection by police. Photographs show sunbathers in bikinis and swimming trunks sitting close to where the girls' feet can be seen poking out from under the towels concealing their bodies. A photographer who took photos at the scene told CNN the mood among sunbathers had been one of indifference."
""The most shocking aspect of all this is the attitude of the people on the beach," the statement said. "No one appears the slightest upset at the sight and presence of the children's dead bodies on the beach: they carry on swimming, sunbathing, sipping soft drinks and chatting."

60+ years ago Weegee took a similar photo on Coney Island.
So CNN will show these dead bodies without seeking release from the families of the deceased but still won’t show dead bodies from the 9-11 attacks.
I loathe the MSM.
I am unaware of such a photo by Weegee.
I know he did a famous shot of the beach crowded with hundreds of people (Coney Island) and later did some trick photography (using a mirror) to manipulate an image of a woman laying on the sand.
And showing mutilated shredded bodies from 9/11 would accomplish what?
I’d rather CNN not shown these bodies, but at least there’s no gore.
The image, believe, is of a dead youth in the background and a pair of young girls preening for the camera in the foreground.
He was paid by the photo used and the papers liked pictures of bodies.
Video and photos of people being forced to jump to their certain deaths to avoid being roasted, and crammed into windows for gasps of breathable air was the reality of 9/11. Showing it would serve the same purpose as the film reels of burning ships at Pearl Harbor did.
It would force those who refuse to a accept reality to be confronted by it, and to galvanize the will of the rest of us.
Romney is in Italy?
These are the same vacationers that let their parents die in the roasting heat a couple years back...why should this shock them?
Did the Pearl Harbor reels show charred and mutilated bodies?
This article seems a little sensationalist to me. While the girls were drowning, it sounds like the lifeguards did try to save them and in fact rescued two of them. Later, when the two dead girls were lying on the beach, the picture shows them covered with towels except for their feet, so how would the people who came along the beach even know they were dead instead of sleeping or playing a game? And especially, I don’t see how the article can claim this is an example of racism. Nobody could possibly tell these girls were gypsies just by looking at their feet.
I’d be much more inclined to blame the Italians if they ignored these girls and just let them drown, but it doesn’t sound like they did that at all.
This story is 3 days old btw....but to CNN it is BREAKING
Here is the beach....I am sure people moseyed on down to the lifeguards to see what the commotion is.
When people die at the beaches in Southern California, of course there is a big effort to resuscitate them in front of the crowd, and they get declared once they are put on the ambulance....
They showed dead bodies. Cause of death was usually scalding.
Do you happen to remember the pictures of naked, imaciated bodies piled like cord wood outside of ovens at concentration camps? What about a bloody, burned Chinese todler sitting in the remains of a bombed Shanghai train station in 1937.
Stark reality galvanizes people. Death should not be trivialized and the dead and injured must be treated with dignity. However, hiding reality does not always equal giving them dignity. Reality, even ugly reality, has its place and adults should take a good look once in a while. The dead also deserve the dignity of having the crimes against them exposed.
Bigtime telephoto lens.
I’m just kind of surprised that other Gypsies didn’t swarm the rescue crews to steal their boat and the coffins to sell on the black market.
Europeans may differ on a lot of issues country to country, but they all seem to hate gypsies. I've been warned about them by locals in London, Venice, Berlin and Athens. They apparently gather in groups and loot everything in sight like a horde of locusts, then move on.
