NYT REJECTS MCCAIN'S EDITORIAL; SHOULD 'MIRROR' OBAMA Mon Jul 21 2008 12:00:25 ET

An editorial written by Republican presidential hopeful McCain has been rejected by the NEW YORK TIMES -- less than a week after the paper published an essay written by Obama, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

The paper's decision to refuse McCain's direct rebuttal to Obama's 'My Plan for Iraq' has ignited explosive charges of media bias in top Republican circles.

'It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obama's piece,' NYT Op-Ed editor David Shipley explained in an email late Friday to McCain's staff. 'I'm not going to be able to accept this piece as currently written.'

MORE

In McCain's submission to the TIMES, he writes of Obama: 'I am dismayed that he never talks about winning the war—only of ending it... if we don't win the war, our enemies will. A triumph for the terrorists would be a disaster for us. That is something I will not allow to happen as president.'

NYT's Shipley advised McCain to try again: 'I'd be pleased, though, to look at another draft.'

[Shipley served in the Clinton Administration from 1995 until 1997 as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Presidential Speechwriter.]

MORE

A top McCain source claims the paper simply does not agree with the senator's Iraq policy, and wants him to change it, not "re-work the draft."

McCain writes in the rejected essay: 'Progress has been due primarily to an increase in the number of troops and a change in their strategy. I was an early advocate of the surge at a time when it had few supporters in Washington. Senator Barack Obama was an equally vocal opponent. 'I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the sectarian violence there,' he said on January 10, 2007. 'In fact, I think it will do the reverse.'

MORE

Shipley, who is on vacation this week, explained his decision not to run the editorial.

'The Obama piece worked for me because it offered new information (it appeared before his speech); while Senator Obama discussed Senator McCain, he also went into detail about his own plans.'

Shipley continues: 'It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obama's piece. To that end, the article would have to articulate, in concrete terms, how Senator McCain defines victory in Iraq.'

It was a strange ad, said to begin airing on CSPAN and FOX news in August, I could not tell if a pro McCain or negative ad. “Solid as Iraq” sung to tune Solid as a Rock.

It’s so uber-obviously an anti-McCain/GOP ad. Democrat provocation propaganda.

RUSH: Hey, somebody answer a question for me. Has Obama found Bin Laden yet? Has Obama solved Middle East peace yet? Oh that's tomorrow. Has he made the rivers run with gold yet? Has he stopped the need for war? Has he walked on water yet? That's for Sunday. Man, oh, man, what is Obama doing? He's pimping Bush's ride, ladies and gentlemen. That is precisely the way to describe this, pimping Bush's ride. Here's a guy that's been in the Senate for 143 days, rather, saying we need more troops in Afghanistan when he goes over there?

This is amazing. This guy is getting more fawning coverage than Princess Di ever got, than Mother Teresa ever got, than the Beatles ever got. These are Obamagasms. It is fascinating to watch. It's like the media are helicopter parents. Their little kid Obama has gone off to summer camp, but they can't leave him alone so they have to travel along and make sure that he stays out of trouble and gets good grades and gets along with all the other kids at the summer camp. "Oh, look. This is where Barry will learn about American history, and there's the building he can learn Spanish so he won't embarrass himself like he did at that Mexican restaurant last week. And look, here's Barry talking to some of the professors, wow, he'll teach them a thing or two, and don't tell me there's basketball over there, too, oh, really? Barry can play basketball just like back home. This is so exciting." Why, the media is saying they've never been so proud of somebody as Obama. Little Barry out there at his little summer camp getting all educated and saving the world at the same time. He's really not much different than a kid in college here. He's going overseas on somebody else's money, taking some classes in the hopes that he might learn something, anything, only it's being taped by fawning helicopter parents disguised as the Drive-By Media. McCain wasn’t lying. He was pandering to the Bush-haters, which unbecomes him. I’m not a Bush fan, but I agreed with the initiation of both wars. Saddam should have been taken out in 1991. We just put it off for 12 years because Clinton didn’t have the balls to do anything because his balls were too wrapped up doing everything.

Great graphic. Mind if I use it?

It's not mine. It has been posted several times on FreeRepublic and other blogs, so I'm assuming the author intended it for public domain.

Democrat provocation propaganda.

No question. It was posted to YouTube by someone going by the name "Haterosexual." All of his/her/its videos are fairly offensive.

If a Republican posted anything like those vidoes they would be called "hateful and mean spirited." Since it is a liberal, they are "art."

I don’t go for conspiracy theories, but not sure about this one... He may be trying to throw the election, but I believe he’s acting on his own, not at the behest of the RNC... See my tagline

I hope the internet is flooded with reprints - who needs the NYT - buncha sissies - who scuttle and run when the going get’s meaty.

I guarantee you I never would have even glanced at McCain's editorial if this dumbass at the NYT would have published it. Now, it's all over the internet, and I read the whole thing, agree with 100% of it, and will definately support McCain on this issue. Even I, who despises McCain as many other conservatives will read this thing and know the DBM is getting too disillustioned by Obama and desperate to win the election for the loser!

The DBM are just like congress, their ratings are in the tank and they beg to be driven 6 ft under. I'll be happy to oblige with a hammer!

Put this statement under that chart:
Shipley became deputy editorial page editor in January 2007, concurrent with Andrew Rosenthal being promoted from deputy to editorial page editor. Shipley had been Op-Ed editor since January 2003

You are right on the money - the best gift the NYT has given McCain is a denial.

During the day I see reports they are waffling - “a change here - an amendment there - blah blah blah”..... such old ladies at a failing journal which has become a daily diary of nonsense.
