BERLIN (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told a German magazine he supported prospective U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's proposal that U.S. troops should leave Iraq within 16 months.

In an interview with Der Spiegel released on Saturday, Maliki said he wanted U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq as soon as possible.

"U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes."

Wait and see: Obama is going to declare victory in Iraq, and say we need to withdraw now.
The media will give him credit for winning the war, and the far left will give him a hero’s welcome when he gets back from the region.
Surreal? Yeah. But we’re talking about the loony left and their desire to get power.

Ahhhhh, so Obama has agreed to the same “time horizon” as President Bush (of COURSE with the possibility of *slight* changes)?

That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.

Typical political rhetoric. It all depends on what the meaning of the word "slight" is. I suspect what he's really saying is the probability of major changes.

How about ungrateful ingrate?

Its no joke though if he’s really prepared to undercut Bush to such an extent. If anything, it rinforces the suspicion that Obama really is Muslim and Maliki is doing his bit to get him elected.

Given the fact that the AP misrepresented Maliki’s prior remarks on this issue and never actually corrected it (the BBC did), I will wait until I have a source that is more credible.

Well said. I'm sure when cornered Maliki will claim that he was misquoted and that he is not endorsing anyone for president.

This Iraq venture can all fall apart within a short time, simply because of the nature of the Iraqis and their monumental honor and face saving culture. I always think back to opinions illustrated is polls of the Iraqi people and interviews of individuals soon after Baghdad fell in 2003. They showed, over and over:

1. Iraqis were glad Sadddam was gone.

2. It was humiliating that Americans had to do it.

3. They thought American troops should leave ASAP.

Within that sort of thinking is room for the Iraqis to create, themselves, all sorts of disastrous outcomes for their country once American influence and control is removed.

If preserving some of their honor is more important than working with the Americans until they have firm control of their own security, then anything can happen after we leave and the US sacrifice will have been wasted.

And Obama is the perfect stooge to facilitate a disastrous outcome. It’s a perfect set-up for Al Qaeda and other terrorists to pull back some and regroup until the Americans depart.

Gee...The media is all ready talking about a visit that hasn't occured...conversations with OUR military which hasn't occurred...and some kind of victory which Obama CAN NEVER BE GIVEN CREDIT FOR...because he was against the war to start with.

Obama wants the money for "Communism" aka reparations. WE MUST ALL BE EQUAL.....WITHOUT DOING EQUAL WORK.

Obama was against helping Iraq from the beginning! How soon everyone forgets, now that we have almost completed the job.

Reuters.

You just know Maliki was asked leading questions and that those remarks were taken out of context.

I'm not defending Maliki; I just know how the scumbag media works.

He must be feeling pretty good to be handing out money in the streets and making these statements. Actually as long as he’s a faithful ally in the WOT and allows our forward deployment to be housed in his country, it’s all good. Iraq needs a cocky leader. In the end, this is about our security, nothing more, nothing less. Bush had a great 7 year run to get it turned in the right direction. Inertia is starting to take over.

Just saw your question...posted my comment at #17.

Der Spiegel is pretty liberal and Reuters probably twisted the entire context.
