McCain Adviser, Phil Gramm, Leaves Campaign NEW YORK (CBS) ― Phil Gramm, a top adviser to presidential candidate John McCain, is resigning from the role as campaign co-chairman after his comments that the United States had become a "nation of whiners" who constantly complain about the state of the economy.
The former U.S. senator from Texas and past presidential candidate made the remarks earlier this month. McCain immediately distanced himself from the comments, but they have been criticized constantly as McCain tries to show he can help steer the country past its current financial troubles.
Gramm had also suggested that the country was facing a "mental recession" instead of real economic problems. Gramm said in a statement late Friday that he is stepping down as a co-chair of the campaign to "end this distraction."

It’s pretty safe to say at this stage that the whining about his whining comment became a political liability.
Nice...Those that lost their ass$$ in Enron must love Wendy Gramm.
It doesn’t matter what Gramm actually said anymore. The Obama campaign seized on (a facsimile of) it, and now Gramm is history. That’s the way the game is played.

The Swiss Banks have been a God-send to the Mafia and drug traffickers. They also helped launder a lot of Nazi loot during World War II.
Come to Houston and see the response when saying the name Gramm.
If you dissect what Gramm actually said, he (in effect) called McCain a whiner.
With the pending UBS hoopla, I think McCain was looking for an excuse to throw him under the bus, anyway.
Good riddance. What a useless contribution he made by that stupid comment. Hello? PUBLICLY ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE HIRED TO LISTEN TO WHINING. Yes. Sorry, dirty words, but gosh, public opinion /is/ something that is to be paid attention to. Wah-wah-wah, you’re whining about the economy. Hell yes, people are whining about the economy because of stupid economic decisions by Congress and the administration have come back to bite us in the rear.
Yeah, not much difference for the folks on the lowest economic scales, but the middle class felt the pain of the housing market /very/ strongly as loan requirements were loosened, these interest only packages were pushed, and interest rates were artificially held down while the president and congress spent like drunken sailors on leave.
Why /shouldn’t/ we whine about these things?
Don’t let the door hit you in the rump.
You’ve done a fine job posting the crazy lib version. Why stop?
After reading what you posted, I can imagine.
I'll be sure to mention that to my teller tomorrow.
You have to cut your losses when something like that happens. McCain should have cashiered him last week.
McCain to Phil Gramm: “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
THE ECONOMY IS IN TROUBLE
AND
PEOPLE WHINE TOO MUCH.
I think these are not contradictory.
The fact is, the going can get tough in life, but most people waste their energy in complaining about it, and not getting their asses in gear and knocking down the trouble with a positive attitude.
Our economy is not in a recession, therefore Phil's comment about it being a mental recession is quite correct for there to be a recession. Last time I checked, we have to have 2 back to back quarters of negative growth. We have yet to have a single quarter of negative growth. To tell the closely held secret, the previous quarter grew more than the 1st.
Could it be better? Yes. But that wasn't the point Phil was making.

Huh. Does the truth bother you.
Sure, get rid of the one guy who sees the world clearly.
You’ve got to be kidding me. Did you forget which website you are posting on today?
Very nicely stated.
IMO, it would have been better for McCain to use it as a moment for a little national education as to what a recession really is and why we aren’t in one.
Unfortunately, McCain has been saying for months that we’re in a recession. He couldn’t very well admit that he’s wrong.
It’s gonna get pretty crowded under that bus if he keeps this up.
