OBAMA TO CATHOLICS: NO VOUCHERS
Catholic League ^ | July 15, 2008 | staff

Posted on 07/18/2008 3:32:37 PM PDT by kellynla

When he was a state senator in Illinois in June 2002, Barack Obama was explicitly asked by Chicago media personality Jeff Berkowitz whether he supports school vouchers. “I would support anything that is going to be better for the children of Illinois,” he said. He emphatically added that “I am not closed minded on the issue.”

In February 2008, Obama spoke to reporters from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the issue. Still keeping an open mind, he said, “If there was any argument for vouchers, it was ‘Let’s see if the experiment works.’ And if it does, whatever my preconception, you do what’s best for kids.”

However, last Saturday Obama told the American Federation of Teachers that he was opposed to vouchers. When his campaign was asked about his new position, it released a statement saying, “Senator Obama has always been a critic of vouchers.”

Commenting today is Catholic League president Bill Donohue:

“Guess Obama couldn’t resist pandering to the teachers union. It’s so easy to tell the media that keeping an open mind on school vouchers is the best way to go. But when cash counts—and the American Federation of Teachers has plenty of it—who cares about principle? Fact is, no amount of empirical evidence was ever going to change his mind.

“Obama now joins a long list of African American elites who wouldn’t dare send their kids to an urban public school, but who works hard at every turn to deny poor black parents the same options he and his wife are so lucky to have. We hope that Catholics, as well as African Americans, get the message.”

You can’t be a democrat and a real Catholic. You can not provide a party that supports infanticide your vote and be a real Catholic. It’s just that simple.

The lab school is the best HS in Chicago. Far superior than Ignatius or Chicago Latin.

I may be in the minority here, but if the Catholic schools can't survive on their own, they nevertheless should not become wards of the state through "vouchers."

Charter schools, single sex education, and a focus on discipline and learning basic skills are what is needed in most public schools. Of course, your average idiot will tell you that THEIR public schools are great, although test scores will say otherwise.

Ideally, public schools, ie WELFARE schools, would be abolished for all but the very poor, but this is never going to happen.

Millions of Catholic Democrats claim exactly the opposite. They would say as Catholics they oppose abortion but support a women’s “right to choose” or other words to that effect.

Being a “cradle Catholic” who attended Catholic schools for fourteen years, I know we didn’t receive any funds from the government and DID NOT WANT ANY FUNDS FROM THE GOVERNMENT for obvious reasons.

So I don’t know exactly where Bill Donohue & the Catholic League is coming from on this issue.

Catholic schools have operated since their inception without government funding.

“Perhaps Obama should consider appointing some actual practicing Catholics to his Catholic outreach network?”

Why would any practicing Catholic support much less work for a pro-abortion politician?

“Millions of Catholic Democrats claim exactly the opposite. They would say as Catholics they oppose abortion but support a women’s “right to choose” or other words to that effect.”

They can “say” what they like BUT to support and/or vote for a pro-abortion politician is AGAINST our religious belief. Abortion is genocide.
Point, Game, Set, Match!

there goes any lib Catholic votes.

Liberal Catholics are already sending their kids to public school, so why should they care about vouchers? I doubt that Obama lost any CINO votes because of this.

“It would be interesting to know his current position on this issue.”

Yea, well Obama changes his “position” on “issues” like I change my socks!

McCain has to be the luckiest candidate for POTUS since Ronald Reagan ran against Jimmy Carter! LOL

Heck, my cat could beat Obama on 11/4!

"You underestimate the ignorance of 95% of the American public."

Not really, I've been saying for months that no levelheaded American is gonna go into the voting booth on 11/4 and vote for an anti-American racist Leftie.

Now bear in mind, I said “levelheaded American” which automatically eliminates all the Lefties and anyone who depends on government assistance for their livelihood.
But that won't be enough to get him elected.

Catholics to Obama: “You don’t get our vote!”

Beat me to it, G Larry, thanks for posting, so I can just cut and paste!

Unfortunately, living here in Michigan under our CINO Gov. Grandmole, I suspect that a great many Catholics do vote Dem, no matter what.

Vouchers are, at best, a half-measure. More likely, they would be a mechanism to destroy private schools and homeschooling. When the government wants to destroy something*, they set up a government-run version, in order to undersell the private version and drive it out of business. What remains, they subsidize, in order to “encourage diversity” or “maximize choices.” Then they regulate it into the dirt. Then they shut it down or take it over.

This is what was done over a century ago with “education.” Actually, it would be more accurate to say that this is what was done with children’s lives, freedom, and relationship with their parents.

After the communization of “education” in America, communizing the rest of human activity is pretty much a mopping-up operation.

* E.g., schooling, mortgages, old-age pensions, Catholic Charities and other religiously-based charity, medical care, etc., etc.

Liberal Catholics don’t give a flying leap at a doughnut for Catholic schools. Liberal Catholics will vote for Obama BECAUSE he is pro-abortion, while parroting the line that “I’m voting for Obama DESPITE his position on abortion.”
