ONE LOCAL pol whose name has not been mentioned could make the perfect running mate -- for Republican John McCain.
Rep. Eric Cantor is 44. McCain is 71.
As a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, Cantor brings the clout and experience on economic and tax issues that many believe McCain lacks. He was a businessman before being elected to the House in 2000 and has been an eloquent spokesman for pro-growth policies ever since.
Cantor would energize economic conservatives in a way that McCain has not, and he possesses the skill and expertise to attack the Democrats' high tax, anti-trade, big government platform as precisely the wrong medicine for a struggling economy. (His wife, Diana, also plays in the financial major leagues, serving for more than a decade as executive director of the Virginia College Savings Plan. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Media General, which owns this newspaper.)
As the Republican chief deputy whip in the House, Cantor is one of the youngest members of the congressional leadership. And in this year of group firsts, Cantor would be the first Jewish nominee on a national Republican ticket.
His consistent, staunch defense of Israel's interests could strengthen McCain's already respectable standing among traditionally Democratic Jewish voters, many of whom are growing nervous about Obama's pastor's embrace of the anti-Semitic Louis Farrakhan. Jimmy Carter's get-together with Hamas terrorists offered another reminder that left-wing Democrats often lend tepid support to Israel.
The congressman from Richmond would keep Virginia and Florida in the GOP column and could help McCain in Northeastern states, such as New Jersey, where the Arizona senator appears to be running better than recent Republican presidential candidates.

The point is, Crist would be a hispandering coupe de gras.
That worries me. I'd be happier with Cantor than anybody else, but Eric was not on the short list, or even long list. I wish he was/is.
You realize J.C. Watts has said he's "considering" voting for Obama, right?
Norm, EV is a rock-solid Conservative. Some of us still do exist, and we’re not going to drink the Kool-Aid when the cost is our souls.
Cantor’s real goal is to become the first Jewish House Speaker.
Starting from scratch.
I grow bored...
Don't worry. Lots more bread and circuses coming your way from the two-party cartel. They'll keep you well entertained.
But yet he did it. And with that kind of attitude, imagine that happening to state after state like falling dominoes.
Remember, if that can happen to a formerly premier Republican state, it can happen ANYWHERE.
Funny you bring up Key West. The gray gays in the southernmost city are the only folks keeping disco alive these days, aside from the guidos in Staten Island, of course. Maybe the two groups should be introduced.
Well, if they love disco, they can’t be all bad.
Do you think Travolta has crossed over from the latter to the former these days ?
Crist, on the other hand, is too much of a selfish bastard to do anything but pitch...
Palin's the obvious star, maybe even more so than Jindal, but neither can play in '08. Palin is a new mother to a down's syndrome child; Jindal needs to spend a few years cleaning up LA.
I think together they're the perfect team '12.
Like I said, anybody but Crist. I think the gay, murderous Rs in FL and a couple other SE states need to be frogmarched and prosecuted, not elected.
Yeah, he did it. But...what exactly was it? Because presidential party primaries have a way of twisting things.
Let me sum up: Everything I’ve heard is true. Yes? :-)
“Remember, if that can happen to a formerly premier Republican state, it can happen ANYWHERE.”
Please, DJ, I’ll laugh myself awake. Let’s both agree Romney made mistakes. But please the Kennedy’s captured the hearts of Massashusetts for the democrats long before Romney, Swift, Cerlucci, or Weld shown up. Yes, the GOP had a remarkable second-wind run at the governorship but that was due more to Duke screwing the state so badly. That wind has past now and the asylum is back in the inmates’ hands.
G’night. See you on the flipside.
Yes I agree unless Cantor is extraordinary good-looking who would appeal to soccer moms who’s likely to vote for Obama this year.
Soul, conscience, sense of integrity... I stand for certain principles, and I expect the GOP to as well. Perhaps some find that laughable, but I don’t. One is something basic, and that’s honesty. When this party promotes an incompetent, pathological liar, it’s no longer a party I can support in good conscience. I expect the lowest-rent trash from the Democrats, not from the GOP.
22 years ago, I was asked to go along to get along for a Democrat in my state who had a high tolerance for corruption, and I refused to do so. And in part for doing so, I had my academic career ruined for my speaking out openly against the man and becoming a Republican. I stay a Republican until its principles are sacrificed and we demonstrate the same diseased morals and values of our opponents. I felt dirty endorsing a deceitful RINO in a key race in 2006 somebody I knew had no business serving in the Senate. I’m not doing that again, not for any race. I am heartsick to see a lot of soulless cretins shilling for that certain ex-Governor. Facts and record to them be damned. That’s NOT my party.
Blunt troubles me, because he just up and decided to quit rather than face a tough, but winnable reelection this year. As it stands now, his former, future Democrat opponent is going to waltz into the office in November. I don’t like these cut and run types, they’re not leaders.
