ONE LOCAL pol whose name has not been mentioned could make the perfect running mate -- for Republican John McCain.
Rep. Eric Cantor is 44. McCain is 71.
As a member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, Cantor brings the clout and experience on economic and tax issues that many believe McCain lacks. He was a businessman before being elected to the House in 2000 and has been an eloquent spokesman for pro-growth policies ever since.
Cantor would energize economic conservatives in a way that McCain has not, and he possesses the skill and expertise to attack the Democrats' high tax, anti-trade, big government platform as precisely the wrong medicine for a struggling economy. (His wife, Diana, also plays in the financial major leagues, serving for more than a decade as executive director of the Virginia College Savings Plan. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Media General, which owns this newspaper.)
As the Republican chief deputy whip in the House, Cantor is one of the youngest members of the congressional leadership. And in this year of group firsts, Cantor would be the first Jewish nominee on a national Republican ticket.
His consistent, staunch defense of Israel's interests could strengthen McCain's already respectable standing among traditionally Democratic Jewish voters, many of whom are growing nervous about Obama's pastor's embrace of the anti-Semitic Louis Farrakhan. Jimmy Carter's get-together with Hamas terrorists offered another reminder that left-wing Democrats often lend tepid support to Israel.
The congressman from Richmond would keep Virginia and Florida in the GOP column and could help McCain in Northeastern states, such as New Jersey, where the Arizona senator appears to be running better than recent Republican presidential candidates.

If McCain wants the Jewish vote, I can think of a certain senator...
Mormons vote in high percentages. Mostly for Republicans.
So, what do you mean by "bringing into the process"? Money again, I take it.
So according to you the country is just sunk and gone. How sad. Good night.
Money is what allows campaigns to put up signs, host rallies, run commericials. It in itself is not inherently evil.
So yes, Romney will bring in money - money from his base, even money from Mormons. Point out what’s inherently wrong with that.
son are also primed.
I actually like Jeb.
Ewww. Yeah, Crist has a nice beard, don’t he ?
BTW, she should go talk to Dina McGreevey and Mrs. Senator Craig before she actually walks down the aisle (or at least makes sure that when Crist has got to get some “action” down at the Purple Pickle in Key West and the public finds out, and it always does, she gets a nice fat settlement from the divorce).
Very weak. I almost feel sorry for you folks. It’s bad enough that you have to defend McCain, now you have to regurgitate the lying Romney spin that constantly seeks to recreate reality.
With his tainted money, *omney is going to feel he is OWED big time and that entitles him to be in control. We’ve already seen what he did when he was in control of a party apparatus in Massachusetts. We’d be better off turning over the GOP to Howard Dean or Michael Dukakis. Not even those two could kill the GOP in VT and MA when they ran the show.
Barbara Boxer ?
And on your part, very arrogant. Arrogant enough to think that no one could possibly offer any retort or even differing viewpoint on some point of contention you apparently hold dear. That’s bad enough by itself.
And Jeb, after his unwillingness to do his sworn duty in the protection of the unalienable right to life of Terri Schindler Schiavo from her judicial murderers, in keeping with Article One, Section Two of the Florida constitution, isn't fit to be elected dog catcher.
Hey, it’s you whose whole political universe now revolves around money. Good luck with that.
He would be owed. It’s called being picked veep. But being owed doens’t mean it’s tainted. It’s only natural that we would offer him a spot for his help, and that being offered a spot he would help.
I’d rather have it be someone outside of Washington. Mark Sanford is my first choice. Sarah Palin is my 2nd.
Crist looks like he should be hanging out on a yacht shirtless and in speedos in Mykonos harbor with pretty young things named Stavros and Yanni.
Only a someone arrogant would interpret a few non-personal comments as a legitimate view into a soul. I have clearly stated several reasons for picking Romney. I - to my own misfotune here chose to stress his financial aspects to a pennypincher political puritan such as yourself, who would take such comments to their illogical extreme. My mistake.
But what about you? What does your politcal universe, as you put it, revolve around? I grow bored...
With this guy, everything Republican he touches, he ruins. I’m not going to just sit here and pretend he did NOT do what he did up in Massachusetts. That doesn’t sit well with my conscience. The man is BAD news.
“Mark Sanford is my first choice.”
*BUMP*
The only "Jewish Senator" I can think of on the GOP ticket is Norm Coleman. McCain/Coleman would be tolerable. The other Jewish Senators are all socialists. And the ultra-liberal pro-abortion, gun-grabbing, illegal alien loving Joe LIEberman stood by side-by-side with Al Gore when then conspired to throw out of the overseas millitary votes. I wouldn't want him for dog catcher, let alone Vice President.
He could resign now and go pursue that dream !
