Did Obama Plant Bogus Dowd Column to Victimize Himself?
Townhall.com ^ | July 17, 2008 | Peter J. Wirs

Did presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign plant a fake story accusing itself of campaign finance irregularities, in order to portray itself as victims of right-wing allegations about the campaign’s successful Internet fund-raising?

In a July 8 2008-article "Bogus Dowd Column spreads quickly" PolitiFact, a project of the St. Petersburg Times and Congressional Quarterly, reported that blogs and chain e-mails were spreading a Maureen Dowd New York Times column that claims the Obama campaign got suspicious contributions from Iran, Saudi Arabia and China. "But the column is a fake," reports PolitiFact. The New York Times also disowned the Dowd column as a fake.

[I originally thought it was hers several weeks ago ]

I had no idea it had been ‘out’ that long, just saw it yesterday. But then I’m doing other things and miss stuff.

Ya...sometimes it takes reminding, lol.

Enjoyed your witty comments a lot PGalt!! My comments often happen in the same manner [extemporaneous], just not as witty as yours.

Funny, if you go to gawker.com you can find this piece that supposedly was posted on May 08 2008:

“Times op-ed columnist Maureen Dowd sat down with the kids at the Harvard Political Review and discussed the important issue of “real news” verus “fake news.” The debate has raged for years now, and it pits the network evening news against Comedy Central, basically. The New York Times counts as “real news,” even though they publish Dowd’s column. Dowd, obv, is unworried about this pretend news crisis. Because, she would like to remind you, she invented it! Sort of.

“When I first started my columns,” Dowd explains, “Michael Kinsley and Bill Safire said to me, ‘You have to stop doing humor columns because you’ll be seen as too girly.’ And I said I would never take humor out of politics.” Thank god she didn’t listen to those buzzkills and stop doing funny columns! Think of how many tortured Sex & the City references and cutesy nicknames we were almost denied!

Perhaps Kinsley and Safire meant “You should stop doing humor columns because you don’t do it as well as Molly Ivins,” but they were too gentlemanly to spell it out?

Dowd isn’t worried about the rise of “blogs” either because she doesn’t know how to turn her iPod on. So she probably doesn’t even know the terrible things some of us have been saying about her for years now.

Anyway we can’t wait to see what new way she comes up with of calling Barack Obama a fag tomorrow.”

I think Hewitt's point was that the birth certificate could be a similar bait and switch tactic by the Obama campaign. Let everyone get all hot and bothered at what looks like a bogus cert (which may have been intentionally altered, then sent to Kos, for that purpose), and then produce a bona fide cert that says the same thing as the bogus one, declaring everyone who doubted the first cert a "right-wing" conspiracist. Case closed, media agrees. No more questions allowed.

The biggest problem with these tactics is that they may be pre-emptive cover-ups. As the author of this article says,

"Should a legitimate Republican entity make such allegations about Obama’s campaign finance misconduct, the Obama people can readily dismiss the attacks as the GOP following the rants of a conservative blogger. In most instances, the "mainstream" media will be disinclined to follow such a story because Obama has already stigmatized it as the product of a right-wing fringe conspiracy....If this is what Obama means by "hope" and "change" then I’m terrified about the future of this campaign."

And, of course, McCain won't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

The 980x735 width is to little or too much much now?

Needs to be 1024x768 maybe?

[Color must be great on the monitor]

It’s so big and bright it blinds me now, lol. Color is beautiful but all the ‘whiteness’ is WHITE!!

A bit ago I had scroll room on the Woodstock gif, now I don’t!! Don’t know the reason.

Installed the new monitor and the resolution is supposed to be 1680 X 1050, but it’s still set to 1024 x 768! So, rounds become a bit oval, lol.

In other words, I have a new large monitor but the settings are still for the 19 inch old one. At least it will be easier to work on my gifs now.

Set at 980x768 may give you the best quality images and views of combo internet webpages

Have you tried viewing some webpages yet at Amazon, etc.?

1680x1050 may be a higher density of pixels - I dunno

I can’t set it even lower devolve, rounds would become ovals. At 1024 they are a bit flattened.

Actually I ‘think’ I was supposed to uninstall settings for the old monitor first, but I was afraid to do that as ‘what would I be seeing’ in order to install the new monitor? Not enough directions and when I put the installation CD in it doesn’t do anything.

Yes, this is Greek I know. I need a computer Geek to tell me.

Aloha Dave!

Obama is getting beau coups bucks from legions of small donors.....under the radar of the Campaign Financing oversight.

Isn't this the M.O. of Chicago community organizer? Bundlers pass out chump change to Obama supporters, $20 or $30 or $40, and tell them to send some or all to Obama's campaign. Names don't matter, addresses neither. A racket the real Mayor Richard Daley would be proud of.

The article was fake, the racket's the real deal.

Look out for references to this alleged Dowd column. It IS A FAKE. When I first saw it referred to here on FR I went to the June 29 issue of the NYT and looked up the rela column, which doesn't contain any such references.

I couldn't find it either when it first appeared, meant to point that out to you FARS and Civ and forgot, sorry.

Apparently there was also a fake Thomas Sowell column that claimed Obama was not an American citizen. It seems unlikely that Obama would plant multiple fake columns against himself as this could obviously backfire.

Dowd, that volume of mail was heavy and I may or may not
