WMNF Evening News Wednesday Listen to this entire show:
Tags: John McCain, Barack Obama, 2008 election, NAACP, school vouchers
A campaign surrogate for John McCain told WMNF today that Barack Obama should be "disqualified" to run for president because of his admitted past drug use.
More on that in a moment.
But first, John McCain received a polite reception in front of the NAACP at the group's annual meeting in Cincinati today. Whether that will transfer to any votes coming from those in attendance is a different story.
The GOP nominee spoke to the nation's oldest civil rights organization, spotlighting his support for school vouchers to help low-income families send children to private or charter schools a popular program among many blacks dealing with struggling public schools.
But McCain began his speech on a humble note apologizing for missing last years convention, and by giving rare praise to his Democratic party opponent.
The bulk of McCains speech was on education, specifically on an issue that has popularity in many parts of the African-American community vouchers to attend private schools. McCain mentioned Opportunity Scholarships being used in Washington, D.C., by 1,900 people, with thousands more on a waiting list.
For years, President Bush skipped the NAACP Convention, as did McCain last year. And its certainly enemy territory for any Republican.
USA Today reported this afternoon that in a random survey of 138 people in attendance at the NAACP convention today, just one said he or she was certain to vote for McCain.
As USA Today reports, a study by political scientists at the University of Michigan and University of Texas after the 2000 election concluded that the appearance by then-Texas governor George W. Bush before the NAACP helped him among some white voters, particularly women.
Dr. Ada Fisher is the North Carolina National Committee woman- elect for the Republican Party, and a Congressional Candidate running for office this fall.
WMNF began our interview with her by asking if she could understand why some blacks would be reluctant to support McCain after he failed to support congressional efforts to have a holiday named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Did he inhale?
;P
“The GOP nominee spoke to the nation’s oldest civil rights organization”
The NRA is the oldest civil rights organization in the USA.
No, but he swallowed.
About a month ago, PUMAs who were working the BC case were advised to switch the focus to the drug issue, particularly the drug-dealing aspect.
?
One of many things that should disqualify him.
Eerggh.
Well, it could be worse. Imagine McCain that close to Helen Thomas.
Apologies in advance for the nightmares.
“Did he inhale?”
Did he distribute and sell to others?
“Drug use in college should not disqualify him....”
I disagree. Smoking weed just makes him foolish. Possession/use of cocaine, is a felony.
Are Democratic sock puppets who impugn McCain ever called Obama surrogates?
If McCain went there expecting any significant black votes in 2008 - he is more delusional than I thought.
In fact - I'm personally furious and insulted that Presidential candidates even speak before RACIST organizations like the NAACP, La Raza, CAIR, etc, etc.....
I'm certain that neither McCain or Obama would speak before the KKK, White Power, White Supremacist or Skin Head groups.
Hell, I'm expecting they may speak before Nation of Islam or the New Black Panthers......after hearing that Obama has members of Nation of Islam on campaign staff.
Why doesn’t our team simply stick to arguing their position on the issues?
This is immature it hurts to read it.
Take the high-road McCain, argue your position on the issues, leave the muck-racking to the Democrats, it used to be what set them apart from us.
This muck just up and raked itself. Can't get to the issues because the muck is too thick.
Strange that McCain’s campaign is making drugs and issue. McCain’s wife is an addict. She even stole drugs from charity boxes. McCain (and her family’s money) got her off, otherwise she would be a felon.
For some reason the GOP thought McCain was the best candicate they could find. I can’t wait for this election to be over.
His being a Muslim disqualifies him.
Which one of McCain's idiot staffers said this? And why is this person unnamed? This whole thing smells of an attempt to smear McCain's campaign as being petty and immature.
Muslim in denial. If he lies about this, what else does he lie about. He’s already on recording talking of studies and recitations that he now denies and calls “smears”.
