Romney Makes His VP Case

Posted by Michael Scherer | Comments (41) | Permalink | Trackbacks (0) | Email This

On Monday night, at a fund-raiser in New Mexico, John McCain said this about his former mortal enemy, Mitt Romney: “I’m appreciative every time I see Mitt on television on my behalf. He does a better job for me than he did for himself as a matter of fact.” This may not have been a joke.

Yesterday, Romney sat down for an interview with CBS News. It is a striking interview, in part because Romney seems to be making the McCain argument better than McCain, or McCain's campaign. There is a clarity to the soundbites that McCain has mostly lacked, a clear line of attack against Obama's experience and McCain's plans. Add to that whatever fundraising burst Romney could provide as a VP candidate, as well as Romney's strength in key swing states like Michigan and Nevada, and it's not hard to see why McCain may end up with a running mate whose hand he didn't shake in the primaries.

[See video at link]

EXCEPT: Mitt says in the interview that McCain distinguishes himself from Obama on drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. This is wrong, according to the latest McCain statements. Both McCain and Obama oppose drilling in ANWR.

"Romney would have made a better *PRESIDENT* than Hillary, Obama or McCain."

Yes. For liberal rodents.

"Frankly, he was the above-and-beyond MOST QUALIFIED, CAPABLE LEADER in the whole field. The guy who turned around the Olmypics."

The Governor, perhaps the last Republican whom will ever be elected to statewide office in Massachusetts, whose negligence and incompetence was nearly without equal, who buried the MA GOP. If you want the quotes, they're in this thread.

"Litmus-test Republicans are aiming at the wrong target in going after him. He got high fiscal conservative scores and was the most culturally conservative Governor Massachusetts has had in 2 generations. Digging up the slime machine that went after him in the primaries and delivered to us a *less conservative nominee than he is* will only serve the purpose of dividing and harming the conservative cause."

Baloney. Apparently you've never heard of Ed King. He actually WAS a Conservative Governor, unlike Slick Willard.

“McCain needs to tap Bobby Jindahl. “

Nope. Save him for later. You can have a guy that inexperience d (he’s been in Gov office only 6 months!) while making the case of how inexperienced the Obama guy is.

Jindahl will be a great P or VP in 2012 or 2016 or so.

“I think he is absolutely the wrong choice for VP”

I think Romney is a big asset mainly because he is a very articulate and able point man on economic issues, which is issue #1 in the election, now that we have effectively Won in Iraq.

McCain can win on national security issues easily, but Obama is winning on economic concerns. McCain needs to turn it around and Romney can help him do that.

I too would prefer a true-blue conservative Veep, but Romney will be an awesome organizer and manager inside the white house, and should he ever get to the presidency himself will be more conservative as President than Bush 41 or 43 were.

Yup, they’ve turned Antioch into a border-town slum in under a decade. Large parts of this section of Nashville you cannot go with your family or visit unarmed...

Who is they? Mormons?

"Leave it to the true-blue ‘conservatives’ to go the extra mile to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Romney would have made a better *PRESIDENT* than Hillary, Obama or McCain."

There is no better way to express the absolute truth. Well done and BRAVO!! : )

He’s an expert on economics, yeah. He sure does love big government Socialist solutions to problems, like health care. $50 abortions and all that jazz.

Same debunked talking points from January. Don’t you guys get tired of posting that malarkey ?

“True, but we need somebody in there when Juan buys the farm.”

Should that sad event happen, it will be a definite shift to the *right* as Romney is more of a real conservative than Mccain.

Your ‘one trick pony’ Romney bashing is tiresome and nonsensical. WT h*ll is this cr*p? “Slick Willard sure does love his Stalinists.”

No, Klingons. Because we all know how the Klingons have been invading our borders. You just a hoot and a half, kiddo.

Mitt really did have the support of many Evangelicals. Too bad the MITT-HATING Evangelicals were noisier.

Or they interpret it differently? Or they are being more pragmatic than I? More forgiving? More Expedient? Not looking back as far? Like the total package of looks and potential/real conservative stances? Think he is pot luck? Know that verses McCain, there are Democrats who look like life long Conservatives, so hell yeah we like him?

Do you know what is going on in their heads to know why they support him? By how much?

Does having a talk show make some of them right? Having an article in a journal?

Because I don't have a show or a recently published article, I can't analyze a large data set and set my own conclusions, I can't see facts before my eyes?

If I have an old CB radio and can broadcast a few miles, can I have 10% of the opinion of a talk show host?

I used to stay in the Haywood Lane area with relatives and you couldn't pay me to drive it now. They've since moved on.

I went to Dillards at Hickory Hollow a month ago and the lady at the counter said their gone.

I wish you well, a move may be uncomfortable but it's ridiculous. Those Illegals leave only after arrest as its a drug trade now. They could care less about real jobs.

“Well, when I see the constant lies spread about certain Presidential/VP candidates, that’s when I stand up and set the record straight” LOL ... it looks more like you are adding more of your own.

Romney was the guy endorsed by National Review, remember. Sure he has flaws, but bashing everyone who likes him as a liberal spawn of satan and claiming he loves Stalinists is abject nonsense.

“People are entitled to their own opinions about candidates” yes we are, so hold off on the ad hominem and venom against those who happen to have a slightly different opinion.

It would not be quite it then would it...

I hear he is weighing options if things go south nationally. He may step up if needed.

If you doubt my qualifications to read a court case, please read my bio.

I took you up on your offer and I would like to say that you and I do not agree on everything; the flat tax versus taxing consumption being an example. That said, reasonable people can disagree and I think you always conduct yourself in a way that brings credibility to this forum.

I wish the people who mis-characterize Mitt Romney's history and views could see themselves as others see them. Name calling and hostility are not acceptable behavior for anyone, but especially people who claim to be conservatives. Once again I will invoke Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Speak Ill of Another Republican.

Earlier the claim was made that everyone who supports Romney has been paid off.

They even tried to say Rush Limbaugh (who is now making 400 million dollars) was paid off LOL

Well, these neighbors have perpetual employment with our f%^#^$witted ex-neighbor and his roofing/construction business. We’ve been in Antioch longer than almost anyone currently here, 34 1/2 years. They haven’t driven us out yet, but they sure have driven down our property values.

It is obvious that you have strong opinions, but no constitutional authority to support them. Please provide a link to the portion of the Massachussetts constitution that the Mass. Supreme Court justices in the majority opinion “disobeyed.” Please provide a link to the constitutional jurisprudence that supports your claim. If you can't provide the links, you don't support the Constitution. You just have an uninformed personal opinion that is advocating anarchy.

"Romney was the guy endorsed by National Review, remember."

Too bad they decided to move WAY to the left instead of endorsing the overwhelming choice of Conservatives, Fred Thompson. Good thing I don't subscribe to it or I'd have had to cancel it.

"Sure he has flaws,"

How dare you criticize the RINO Messiah ! Don't you know his hairness is absolutely perfect, without sin ! You're a Mormon hater, that's what you are !
