Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.
Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of "Special Report." They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.
In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, substitute for Chris Wallace as host of "Fox News Sunday" and anchor special events.
A former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days, Hume has been a central part of Fox's success. He has anchored on election nights and at political conventions and moderated a number of presidential debates. Hume has enjoyed good access to top Bush administration officials; when Vice President Cheney was under intense criticism after accidentally shooting a hunting companion two years ago, he did one interview, with Hume.
Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has made no decision on whether "Special Report," which began as a temporary program during the Clinton impeachment, will continue, or who would anchor it if it does, the sources said.

I didn’t know Clinton ejected him.
Can you tell me more about it?
I am so totally depressed at the loss of Tony Snow. and Britt’s leaving is hitting me very hard.
There are none left that I truly respect and trust.

I always kind of thought that Brian Wilson would step in when Brit left. Wilson got a promotion a few years ago (along with Jim Angle and “Campaign” Carl) but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him “resurface”.

It's hard for me to realize that as a 63.5 year old, everyone else is aging too. As I left my employment for the 'younger crowd' it won't be long before ALL the people "of a certain age" are no longer behind a news desk or anchoring a news program and a much younger set of men and women (merely children comparatively) will be sitting there telling me what's going on in the world.
Ted Russert was YOUNG and Tony Snow was YOUNG, but Brit Hume is "middle aged" just as I. He's definitely not "old" and I hope that he will continue to be actively involved giving speeches, writing books, and most of all, spending time with his family, besides his work at Fox News.
Best Wishes to Brit and his family.

Fox News is known to be developing a show with Mike Huckabee. I figured it would be a weekly show, but with Brit Hume’s spot open, perhaps he’ll get a daily show in that time slot.

This is a bummer. I relied on Brit to be the voice of reason every evening. If they give the job to Sheppard Smith I might have to eat a bullet. If I were Roger Ailes I'd try out Brian Wilson.

Oh, this is AWFUL! Brit Hume and "Special Report" are my all-time favorites... that one hour is really all anyone needs as far as TV news is concerned, IMO. I was fearing this, as I knew Brit was in his 60s and was perhaps looking for more time off. I'm glad we will still at least see him on FNC from time to time.
PLEASE e-mail Fox News and request that they keep Special Report in its current (excellent) format! I think Brett Baier does a fine job subbing for Brit, perhaps he will take it over full time...

I'm not sure that 63.5 is middle aged. I don't know many people that are 127 years old. I also don't call myself middle aged (57) as I don't know any 114 year olds either. :-)

On the bright side, Bret Baier is a rising starAgreed. Bret is great.
I agree... I think Bret Baier would be an excellent full-time replacement for Brit on Special Report. Although I'll still miss Brit... :-(

I agree. Well, at least Brit will be back from time to time, but I hope they don't cancel Special Report! (Bret Baier does an excellent job subbing for Brit, IMO).
PLEASE contact Fox News and request that at least Special Report be kept in its current format (and time slot):
