Archbishop of Canterbury: 'Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims'

Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims, the Archbishop of Canterbury said today.

Dr Rowan Williams also criticised Christiaity in history for its violence, harsh use of punishments, and its betrayal of its peaceful principles.

His acknowledgement of Christian faults came in a highly conciliatory letter to Islamic leaders calling for an alliance between the two faiths for 'the common good'.

It risked fresh controversy for the Archbishop in the wake of his pronouncement earlier this year that a place should be found for Islamic sharia law in the British legal system.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams has admitted that Christian doctrine is offensive to muslims

The letter to prominent Muslim scholars comes at a time when Dr Williams is facing immense pressures from inside his own Church of England and Anglican Communion.

A gathering of Anglican bishops from around the world that begins tomorrow is on the brink of a devastating split over whether homosexuality and gay clergy should win their approval.

The Archbishop's letter is a reply to feelers to Christians put out by Islamic leaders from 43 countries last autumn.

In it, Dr Williams said that violence is incompatible with the beliefs of either faith and that, once that principle is accepted, both can work together against poverty and prejudice and to help the environment.

He also said that the Christian belief in the Trinity - that God is father, son and Holy Ghost at the same time - 'is difficult, sometimes offensive, to Muslims.'

Trinitarian doctrine conflicts with the Islamic view that there is just one all-powerful God.

So is Judaism, Archbishop, but since both Judaism and Christianity predate Islam, I don’t think it’s the former two who need to change anything.

With “religious leaders” like this guy, no wonder England is circling the drain.

Is this news?

The Gospel is an offense to those who cling to this world which is passing away. Islam with its sensual, fleshly ‘paradise’ and its demonic doctrine of conversion by the sword is most assuredly of this world, so naturally the Gospel is an offense to its adherents, even as it is to the self-avowedly secular.

Unbelievable.

Rowan Williams has been a disaster. Not just for Anglican/Episcopalian communicants. Why doesn’t he just take off his hat and put on a turban?

Former Cradle Episcopalian. Now Evangelical.

Trinitarian doctrine conflicts with the Islamic view that there is just one all-powerful God.

Utter nonsense.

The doctrine of the Trinity maintains the core belief in ONE omnipotent God; revealed in three persons.

It is the misconception on the part of Islam to attribute the belief in three gods to Christianity.

"He also said that the Christian belief in the Trinity - that God is father, son and Holy Ghost at the same time - 'is difficult, sometimes offensive, to Muslims.'"

Yep, the Trinity is really offensive to Muslims, but I'm sure they won't have any problem with the Church of England ordaining gay priests and bishops.

"In it, Dr Williams said that violence is incompatible with the beliefs of either faith and that..."

Me thinks Dr. Williams does not know much about Islam.

He’s just figuring this out? Has it dawned on him that Muslim doctrine is offensive to Christians? Yet we don’t cut their throats for it when we come across them.

Perhaps the Church of England should bow to Muslim sensibilities and Sharia law regarding homosexuality and gay clergy.

“Christian doctrine is offensive to Muslims”

“Show tolerance towards their intolerance!”

or

“Submit to your masters”

All the same.
