WASHINGTON — Senator McCain will announce plans today for an Iraq-style "surge" of troops in Afghanistan.

An adviser to the campaign told The New York Sun that, in a speech to be delivered in Albuquerque, N.M., the senator will call for an increase in combat troops and the creation of a special Afghanistan tsar to coordinate policy toward the country. "There will be a surge for Afghanistan. It will be moving combat troops in and applying the lessons from Iraq and the strategy that was successful in Iraq and taking that to Afghanistan," this official said.

Unfortunate combination of terms.

The lessons of the surge were being practiced in Afghanistan before the surge. In 2006, the Army was pushing folks off the main FOBs and working with tribal elders.

Most of our problems in Afghanistan are close to the Pakistan border. Since Pakistan is a safe haven to regroup and resupply, some of the surge cannot be replicated.

A larger military presence would help, but it might be good for folks to remember that Afghanistan is a larger country than Iraq, and much more primitive.

Ah...but "aint a dime's worth of difference" Obama has also endorsed a surge of more U.S. troops into Afghanistan, only he beat McCain to the punch.

Absolutely right. We've had the local people, especially the Northern Alliance, on our side from the beginning.

A pretty safe bet since Bush and Petraeus are already executing it already. Does McCain have anything at all to offer that is his idea alone? He either steals success from Bush while distancing himself from him simultaneously taking swipes at the administration on Iraq and Katrina or he mimics Obama with socialist policy tripe.

McCain- Conservatives don't want him and liberals don't need him.

Well, The Messiah Lord Barack Obama says it is a war we have to win. It's even a headline on Yahoo. That is sooooooo daring of him to say we have to win. Wow, he is such a Commander-in-Chief.

Good point. Deep down the differences between Obama and McCain on foreign policy are trivial. Both call for a surge in Afghanistan and both call for an expansion of the U.S. military. The differ on Iraq but even here Obama is fudging. Ain’t a dime’s worth of difference....and so it goes.

I'm not a McCainiac but I think there is a huge amount of difference between the two on the WOT. Barry will get us all killed. McCain won't.

I was merely pointing out their similarities on two issues: increasing overall troop levels and increasing troop leader in Afghanistan. Interestingly, both also love to talk about “service” and “sacrifice,” to them, of course. 1960 deja vu. With Obama you get a Kennedy but with McCain you get a Nixon on steroids. Both see themselves as qualified to “safe us from ourselves.”

LOL! May I ask what you are smoking? "Mr. Mission Accomplished," if you'll remember, resisted the surge that McCain and Pratreus called for until "we took a thumpin'" in the 2006 election. He and his failed SECDEF, Don Dumbsfeld (the same director of "autopenned" condolence letters of slain military men and women he lied about reading), consistently dug their heel$ in as they wanted war on the cheap "with the Army you go to war with" and were willing to forgo any notion of surge in casting aside the proven strategy of using overwhelming force to conquer the enemy!

No, unfortunately, the Yellow Stain from Texas demonstrated that to me. Dumber ass!
