Kristinn, won’t a veto of the Interior Approps bill have the same “opening” effect, if the langauge proscribing exploration & product is not removed in conference?

With nearly 75% of the American people favoring offshore drilling it will be interesting to see how the Dems try to get around this one. The bashing of oil company execs and painting Bush and Cheney for being pawns of nasty “big oil” is already wearing thin. I would think that at least some of the Dems are smart enough to know that taxing “big oil” will just increase the price of gasoline and that they dare not actually do this before the election, despite all the puffery that “big oil” is just gouging us.

Petition signed, but if I read the counter correctly, there are only 300 signatures. This petition needs to be bumped and hit a lot harder.

I foresee a chicken livered Congress that might just let it expire without vote or comment. That would be the only way to avoid a political fight they cant afford to lose at this time. I think you will proved correct. The tide has turned, the enviros will mess their panties but the nation wants more fuel now.

"Dont need to filibuster it, let the Dems pass it and see how many votes they will lose." Yup, Democrats Landrieu and Salazar are already on record to drill.

but every oil rig and drilling ship in existance is already booked for the next few years
Long Beach, Ca. Oil Island (note shoreline at bottom of picture and breakwater barely visible at far right)
There are many oil rigs existing off shore in Huntington Beach, Santa Barbara and Long Beach (as shown above), these rigs are existing production platforms with drilling capabilities. If the ban were lifted they could be in a position immediately to start drilling new wells, depending on many variables.

"it is important to understand this fact: The ban by the U.S. Congress on off-shore drilling has to be imposed every fiscal year and is scheduled to expire Sept. 30, 2008."
Why does it "have to be imposed every fiscal year?" How about a little background? Who started this and when? Was it Carter, Reagan? Bush I? Clinton? Bush II?
