My Democrat Congressman's Response To The Fairness Doctrine

Posted on 07/14/2008 8:35:55 AM PDT by ConservativeMan55

My state (Oklahoma) has Democrat Congressman Dan Boren. Boren is one of 22 Democrats that has not signed Congressman Mike Pence's discharge petition for the Fairness Doctrine.

Boren says he will not support Barack Obama for President. So I thought it would be a good start to send him an e-mail.
Knowing that Mr. Boren is an "Independent" Democrat I sent him a nice letter asking him to support the petition. I will repost the e-mail I received from him. My question to Freepers is.. is this enough? He only says he signed an amendment to the financial services appropriations bill that prohibits funding for the Fairness Doctrine.

Can some smart Freepers help me out here? Does the amendment blocking funding to the Fairness Doctrine really do anything?

Here is his response to my letter below.

Dear Mr.

Thank you for contacting me about the Fairness Doctrine. It is always helpful for me to hear from my fellow Oklahomans about issues that are important to them, and I appreciate the opportunity to respond on this important issue.

The Fairness Doctrine is a repealed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) policy which continues today to be the focus of national and congressional debate. I believe that it is important to balance the right of a free press with the need for honest and balanced information.

Democracy works best when citizens have access to clear and authentic information about the world. Like you, I believe strongly in the freedom of the press and do not think the government should over-regulate the airwaves. This is why I voted in favor of an amendment to the financial services appropriations bill that prohibits funding for the Fairness Doctrine.

Finally, and most importantly, I will continue to keep your views in mind as Congress considers future legislation related to the Fairness Doctrine.

Again, thank you for contacting me about this important issue. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully Yours,

Dan Boren Member of Congress

I hope that maybe if 1 or 2 Congressman crack and sign the petition we can get others too as well.

Nancy Pelosi doesn't have much sway out here in Oklahoma. :)

Remember: The only truly free speech is regulated, approved and sanctioned by our government.

Have a nice day. :D

He’s ducking the issue with plausible deniability.

He didn’t answer your question, did he?

LOL

Well this whole Fairness Doctrine thing freaks me out.

In Canada Mark Steyn was put in jail for a book he wrote.

Don’t believe that could happen here.. think again.

Sounds like some fence sitting to me. Like trying to be on both sides of the fence at the same time. Just voting to not fund the Fairness Doctrine isn’t exactly voting to not reinstate it.

Nope!

That’s because he didn’t sign the petition yet.

My question is.. does the Amendment he signed do anything?

You're lucky your D Congress-vermin even sent a reply that described the same issue you asked about.

I have an R Congressman who is great, but I have a D Senator who when I email him he sends a response that is nowhere near what I asked about.

His responses usually look like:

"Thanks for your letter. (insert liberal giberish here) Would you like to Donate?

"Boren says he will not support Barack Obama for President."

He's not endorsing Obama...but he will vote for him.

And IMO, it appeared by his reply to you...that he's weaseling on the Fairness Doctrine vote.

He wrote a book criticising muslims.

Humorist Mark Steyn, outsourced from Canada, filled in behind the Golden EIB Microphone while Rush visited the dentist. Mark enjoyed our First Amendment for a day, while up north his book “America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It” came under assault from the Canadian government for offending Islam.

A Muslim living in Canada charged Mark with hate crimes over an excerpt of his book in Maclean’s magazine, and filed a complaint before the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal! For Details, check out FreeMarkSteyn.com and MichelleMalkin.com.

This would be a great issue for our side to use as a club against the Dems. Unfortunately our (?) nominee has shown he is willing to curtail freedom of speech as well. Not only did he co-author that hideous legislation that GWB should have vetoed, but he even said he would support legislation that would limit negative campaigning. Almost as scary as Obama.

“Nancy Pelosi doesn’t have much sway out here in Oklahoma. :)”

Not surprising since people in Oklahoma use their heads for thinking for themselves. Piglosi has a following of fools and deviants.

I don't think Steyn has actually been jailed in Canada, though they are dragging him in front of that silly human rights tribunal. Big difference from being jailed, though.

When he filled in for Rush last week he said he sat in jail for a week.
