Members of Ya Es Hora Coalition, We Are America Alliance Coalition of Colorado, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, and Latina Initiative last week held a news conference to mark the launch of an effort to help more immigrants apply for citizenship and become a part of the civic process.
This year, volunteers hope to register 500,000 new Latino, Asian and immigrant voters in 13 states as well as encourage 1 million registered voters to go to the polls, said Rachel Hamrick with We Are America Alliance.

But doesn’t one HAVE to be an AMERICAN CITIZEN to vote? Since that process of becoming a naturalized citizen is a long one, that would preclude any immagrant NOT a CITIZEN of the USA from voting in this upcoming election. If they do, they are guilty of voter fraud.
yes my friend, one does have to be a citizen to vote.
this is the reason the dumicrats are so against requiring voter id’s (which should be a law - there is no excuse for any citizen to not have a valid picture id since every bank, government office etc require them)
you know their moto “vote early and often”
It doesn’t seem to make any difference that ACORN pleaded guilty in Seattle for their role in the biggest election fraud scheme in Washington state history.

Not to be to sarcastic here but we are talking about Democrat Party Politics.
What part of Democrats and Voter Fraud don’t you get?
Back in 2000 ACORN was found to have given hundreds of applications for citizenship to Hispanics and at the same time gave, and collected, voter registration applications which they turned in immediately.
Of course this was against the law but I never read about anything happening to these criminals.
Since the `trial’ is in 4 months, the GOP better lawyer-up now for voter fraud.
Wait a second, what am I thinking—they want “God’s children” to vote.....
They run for office maybe'\????
And here’s what galls me. State Farm Insurance is working with Ya Es Hora to the tune of one million dollars.
State Farm Sponsors
Hispanic Voting Drive

With an eye on the fast-growing Hispanic market, State Farm Insurance Cos. will announce Thursday that it will be the lead sponsor of the largest national campaign thus far to encourage Latinos to become U.S. citizens and register to vote. That will make it the first mainstream U.S. corporation to put money behind the massive mobilization effort ahead of the November presidential vote.
State Farm, one of the country’s top home and auto insurers, will inject $1 million into the “Ya Es Hora” (It’s About Time) campaign. The drive — backed by the largest Spanish-language broadcast and print media in the U.S., and spearheaded by a nonpartisan outreach group, the National Association of Latino Elected Officials Educational Fund — could influence the agenda and outcome of the 2008 election.
In addition to the cash infusion, 4,000 State Farm agents who serve the Hispanic community across the country will provide U.S. citizenship applications and voter-registration materials to clients. More than eight million green-card holders, or legal permanent residents, currently are eligible to become U.S. citizens, and the majority are immigrants from Latin America.
Some conservative critics are wary of the campaign because Latinos have tended to support the Democratic Party.
State Farm doesn’t have a political action committee and doesn’t give money to any campaigns, a spokesman said, though it is likely that executives and employees associated with the company have given to both parties’ candidates.
Among others, Univision Communications Inc., the largest Spanish-language television network in the U.S., and ImpreMedia LLC, the largest Spanish-language newspaper publisher in the U.S., have devoted airtime and pages, respectively, to boost Hispanic civic participation ahead of the presidential election. State Farm kicked off its public-service effort last year.
Hispanics constitute the largest minority group in the U.S., numbering 47 million and accounting for about 15.5% of the population. About one-quarter of Latino adults are illegal immigrants. Already the youngest and fastest-growing group, Hispanics will account for one in every four Americans by 2050, according to Census Bureau projections.
But Hispanics appear to lag behind the average in purchasing home- and auto-insurance coverage. A 2005 study by Florida State University found that 55% of Hispanics have auto insurance, compared with 80% of the general population; 33% of Hispanics who own their homes have homeowner’s insurance, versus 63% of non-Hispanics.
“The demographic trends tell us where” to invest, said Mike Fernandez, vice president for public affairs at State Farm. The company has partnered with NALEO before to train educational policy makers working to close the achievement gap between Latino and non-Latino students.
State Farm only offers auto insurance to people with a legal U.S. driver’s license — meaning that illegal immigrants would be precluded from buying its policies except in the handful of states where they are allowed to get licenses. That means the bulk of any gains that State Farm realizes in the Hispanic market will have to come from legal residents.
Historically, Latinos have had a lower voter-participation rate than other groups, but immigrant Hispanic voters tend to show higher rates of participation than U.S.-born Latinos. Barack Obama and John McCain will address the annual NALEO conference in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. Sen. Hillary Clinton, who won more support among Latinos than Sen. Obama in Democratic primaries, is scheduled to address the gathering Thursday.
The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute at the University of Southern California projects that at least 9.3 million Hispanic voters will go to the polls in November, an increase of 23% from 2004.
State Farm’s $1 million will go to hiring more staff, setting up a permanent information hotline and spreading the Ya Es Hora campaign to smaller towns.

As a white male in his 30’s who’s a white collar professional with a wife and 4 kids, and I’m a tax-paying, law-abiding citizen — I ask, “Who’s looking out for me?”
I guess more specifically, I want to know why it’s “mainstream” that no one looks out for people like me?
I particularly love this quote from the article.
“To speak English was hard,” she said.
“I try to learn one new word a week.”
At at that rate she probably has the vocabulary of a 4 year old.

If you want an America that reflects the values of Reagan then you have to have the population #s to support it.
The good news is, the white liberals have maybe 1-2 kids max.
The bad news is, conservatives have maybe 1-2 kids max. Plus the liberals new SOCIALIST DROID ARMY of NAACP, LaRaza, mecha, CAIR, and other legal and illegal immigrants from unstable, undemocractic countries have 4-6 kids on average.
Folks we have to start creating more kids!
Demographics is destiny!
Yes you have to be a citizen, and we’re seeing record numbers of people swearing in as citizens. We have all sorts of people in this country who have had green cards forever who have just never applied for citizenship, but increasingly these eligible legal permanent residents are applying for naturalization and swearing in as citizens. I’m in a small town in the South and we are having over a 100 people swear in in my town every month. Some of this may be to vote, but from what I am seeing fear is motivating a lot of this. Public opinion of immigrants is not so good right now. They’re feeling the hate, and they’re seeing deportations on the rise in a big way. Even green card holders are getting deported for getting in minor trouble or something, things that probably would not have triggered removal proceedings just a few years ago, and that trend will likely continue. There is a feeling of urgency among a lot of these people now. They’re getting their citizenship now while they still can.
“vocabulary of a 4 year old”
You raise a good point that I haven’t seen for a while: `vote dilution’.
Why should the vote of illiterate—quite possibly in their own language, as well—illegal aliens cancel out our votes?
Neither party is interested in what is best for us.
We’re doomed.
