I particularly love this quote from the article.

“To speak English was hard,” she said.

“I try to learn one new word a week.”

At at that rate she probably has the vocabulary of a 4 year old.

You raise a good point that I haven’t seen for a while: `vote dilution’.
Why should the vote of illiterate—quite possibly in their own language, as well—illegal aliens cancel out our votes?
Neither party is interested in what is best for us.
We’re doomed.

One new word a week, eh? From the same general language family. When I was learning Japanese, my goal was 20 new words a day. I wasn't fluent, but I was getting by in five months time.

And I'm willing to bet it was a whole lot harder than a native Spanish speaker learning English.
