I was evicted because of security clampdown for the Beijing Olympics

I was evicted because of security clampdown for the Beijing Olympics

Jane Macartney in Beijing

I will miss the tree-lined alley in the heart of Beijing that has been my home for three years. But the security clampdown for the Beijing Olympics has edged into even this narrow lane.

It was always clear that the Olympics would disrupt the lives of the people of Beijing, that security would be intense and the rules and regulations deeply intrusive. But it's always a surprise when this happens to you.

The underlying factor in all this is fear. Fear pervades the system in China. Fear of trouble, fear of reprisal, fear of fines, fear of a blot on your record, fear of consequences, often vague and undefined. It is a fear that has resulted in my being forced to leave my home, cats under my arm, because of the Olympics.

Fear cannot co-exist with freedom.

This whole Beijing thing is one of the biggest farces of the 21st century. I hope its abject phoniness is blown wide open for the whole world to see.

This whole Beijing thing is one of the biggest farces of the 21st century.

IMHO,
It's deja vu all over again.

The Twentieth Century had the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
The Twenty-first Century goes for an early repeat after only 8 years.

But I've got to hand it to the ChiComm hierarchy.
They learned from the 1936 Berlin Olympics to not have a single
mouthpiece that might give focus to complaints about this farce.

But the ChiComms are also idiots...for not realizing that some
decent public apology for Tibet, Taiwan and Tiennamen Square
would go a long way.

Dictators/Central-Planners (fortunately) usually don't understand
this nuance of human perception.

"Fear pervades the system in China."

And this just happened? The rabbits that I'm trying to keep out of the garden are more mentally gifted than this reporter.

IT'S A SLAVE STATE!

Sorry, but for those who may have missed it...

I fail to understand the supposed appeal of the Olympics these days, especially for the major events.

Sounds to me like maybe the Chinese are using the Olympics as an excuse to break long-term leases on properties of increasing value.

But while Dems were officially denouncing our dealings with them, the GOP was saying that the interactions provided the only opportunities to get the seeds of freedom in there. But I see now that it was mostly just interest in personal profits.

Then, of course, the Clintons were just interested in the personal gain, too.

Why would anyone that claims to love freedom and democracy go to this hell hole, China, for these useless, idiotic Olympics?

I have no sympathy for this woman. She should never have gone to China in the first place.

We should be fighting these commie bastards, not pretending they are worthy members of humanity.

You two have certainly tapped into my psyche.

This deja vu all over again from the 1936 Olympics is too much for me.

I'll be watching for all of zero seconds during the whole event.

I'd love it if NBC got zip ratings, and had to eat it big-time. Alas our populace is so brain dead, I doubt 2% of it will even think to question the event being held in totalitarian China.

One day China rolls over and wakes everyone up, but it certainly hasn't happened yet.

Frankly, as stupid as we have been, I'll only be able to work up about half a care. What we have sewn we will reap. Alas, nothing changes, just the names of the idiots.

Along the same lines was the Miss Universe pageant from Saigon on Sunday night. Oh it was just one accolade to another for Ho Chi Min’s workers paradise. About 35 years ago we lost close to 70,000 young men trying to achieve freedom for the South Vietnamese. You'd never know it tonight.

Big business has had it's way in Vietnam. The rewards for the Communist regime have exceeded even John McCain's wildest hopes. He said something to that effect at one point (not on the show or even in a current contemporary setting), but he said it none the less.

I supported the Vietnam war. I only wish our government had supported as well. And the quickness with which we suddenly become Communist Vietnam's bosom buddy after the war, just sickened me.

Only a little over fifteen years after the war, some of my favorite folks ( /s ) in the Senate of the United States had gone to work to reward some of the worst mass murderers in human history, with normalized relations. You really have to scratch your head and ask what that was all about. Well, it cost one ass my vote. I can say that much for it.

“I hope its abject phoniness is blown wide open for the whole world to see.”

Could be. Even my liberal rag of a newspaper was talking aobut how buildings are getting “improved”, but with just a facade facing the street. And to improve traffic, is prohibiting tucks, cars on an alternate day pass, etc.

However, I wonder if all of the TV will be run through the State to only show the facades, the clean streets, and the the clean air (oh- they are also closing down factories and construction before and during the Olympics!!).

The news reported that dog meat would be pulled from the Menus around town too.
Cat and rabbit may follow suit.

No Jane, you were evicted because of your left wing lunatic protesting activities. They don’t tollerate lunatics running around smashing things and disrupting other peoples right to gather and watch an event in peace. You are lucky you aren’t in a Chinese jail.

Occams Razor...she is nice digs in a good location. She’s lived there for 3 years and the building owner smells BIG BUCKS with the Olympic Games in town.

Frankly, I think this makes a lot more sense than all this trembling fear crap. But maybe no as ‘heart-touching’ a story. The building owner smells $$$$’s.
