In Pennsylvania, McCain Tells a New Version of Heroic P.O.W. Story -- Subbing the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Green Bay Packers

July 10, 2008 5:37 PM

Yesterday in Pittsburgh, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., professed his love for the Steelers to KDKA-TV.

Watch HERE.

Asked what first comes to his mind when he thinks of Pittsburgh, McCain chuckled, "the Steelers.  I was a mediocre high school athlete but I loved and adored the sports but the Steelers really made a huge impression on me particularly in my early years."

And then McCain told a rather moving story about his time as a P.O.W. "When I was first interrogated and really had to give some information because of the pressures, physical pressures on me, I named the starting lineup, defensive line of the Pittsburgh Steelers as my squadron mates..."

Ah, but they take us dwellers of the “fever swamps” and subhuman. Why anything they take from us, it is like taking a banana from a monkey’s hand. The “human” can claim ownership. We are just swamp dwelling primates.

Time to ask JimRob. Are the MSM free to take any material developed at FR as they please, and report it without any attribution to Free Republic?

It’s only a news story for you and those who don’t have bigger things in their lives to worry about, like rising gas prices and the fact that the.

The fact that the ... what? Having a McCain moment yourself?

Endearing oneself to Steelers fans is NOT what I would call headline news.

You just don't get it, do you? Evidently McCain (or somebody on McCains staff) thought endearing him to Steeler fans was important. If you are going to do that by telling a story from your own life to lend verisimilitude, when the story blows up it calls into question your truthfulness and character.

Now, pay attention, because this is important: McCain has already decided he's gotten all the Republicans he's going to get. There has been NO outreach to conservatives since the conservative PAC he addressed just after effectively clinching the nomination, and there isn't going to be any more outreach. So McCain's efforts are going to consist of appealing to uncommitted voters. Uncommitted voters, whether they lean right or left, are male or female, black or white all have one thing in common: they are extremely stupid. And yes, they will vote on the basis of something stupid like the fact that McCain told a lie about the Pittsburgh Steelers. The media called Bush's Ohio win over Kerry "razor thin" at 150,000 votes, but Bush lost Pennsylvania to Kerry by half of that, <75,000 votes. If McCain wins Pennsylvania, this election is OVER. Idiotic screw-ups like this will not help McCain do that. McCain is running the worst campaign since Bob Dole. That's what the story is here. Wake up.

“Uncommitted voters, whether they lean right or left, are male or female, black or white all have one thing in common: they are extremely stupid.”

sad, but true.
It saddens me today because yesterday I was shocked to hear a person who I love very much say to me “I just don’t know who I am going to vote for”

Is this person “stupid”?
I would hate to say that - but there certainly is something very wrong with remotely considering you might pull the lever for Obama.

Is this person “stupid”?

Probably not.

I overstated the case for the benefit of an apparent McCainiac who doesn't seem to understand the importance of running a tight ship. [BTW, I am unquestionably voting for, and probably working for McCain -- if his disorganized campaign ever opens a victory office in this town.]

Let's agree on this: They are typically very poorly informed on the issues. There is a high -- but not perfect -- correlation between ignorance and stupidity.

What is wrong is that this year the Republicans did not field a candidate that is frankly well liked by the base. Long gone are the days when one simply shines the manure by slapping an “R” next to it’s name and expects an uneducate base to just fall into line. Juan is not not worthy of my vote. I imagine that your loved one is, like many of us thinking of this mans’ MANY past indiscretions and asking, “would I reward my child for bad behavior?” Would I promote an employee that consistently sold company secrets to rival businesses?” If I do so, does that not just encourage that person and others looking at the reward to continue with the same behavior?”

You see, Juan has had NO pivot point. No point where he listed all of his knife jabs into the backs of his (nominal)party and then said, “I was wrong. If you give me your vote I will never do these things again, I ask your forgiveness and for a chance to prove myself.” The reason is because he knows full well that there are enough people out there that see a big “D” next to someones’ name and wet themselves in terror. He knows that those cowards would vote for the most lefty politician in the world so long as there was an “R” after his/her name. In other words, he knows that the number one principle that those folks hold is, “Which policitian is going to make my boots fill up with my own urine slower?

Darn....I just started wearing hip waders. :(

Your description about the lack of a pivot point with McCain was excellent. Instead, we have seen the opposite, as in Juan new commitment to "comprehensive immigration reform".

It's beyond being just politically tone deaf. It is a considered enmity to his own country at this point. Add cap and trade to the mix, and America is destroyed. Funny how McCain, the so-called Republican savior of the Republic, promotes both these travesties.

Ping the person you're referring to if you're gonna say something like that.

Let's be clear here. I'm not a McCainiac. He hasn't earned a vote from me thus far. I didn't vote for him in the primary, and if the way things keep going, I probably won't be pulling the lever for him in November.
