Gramm calls slowdown 'mental' By: Mike Allen July 10, 2008 10:01 AM EST
Former senator Phil Gramm, a top economic adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), referred to the economic slowdown as "a mental recession," and referred to the United States as a nation of whiners.
The comments, in an interview with The Washington Times, could hurt the campaigns efforts to convince working-class Americans that McCain feels their pain.
Democrats immediately condemned the remarks as callous, and quickly began working to gain widespread attention for them.
The Democratic National Committee issued a statement titled: Out of Touch Much, Phil.

It gets in the way of the demagoguery.
Do those folks even want to win?
MSN is pounding bad news only to get their boy elected.
It’s a mental problem when I go to put gas in my car and pump $20 in 1.3 minutes with a whopping 5 gallons.
Or pay nearly $5 for a gallon of generic milk.

Amen.
MSN is pounding bad news only to get their boy elected.
Whoa! Can you call him a boy? Oh my, that may be worse than threatening to cut his “stuff” off.

Now, give us some money.
This whole sweet senate deal needs to be dismantled. These senators have no connection with the real world.
Most have no mortgages, a great pension for life, and lucrative croney positiones lined up once they're on the inside.
This country's government is sick and needs an overhaul.
Your ride is ready...
I only meant the white-half.
Gramm is absolutely spot on, but yes, telling the truth is no way to get elected these days.
Gramm is an idiot. He has been in politics far too long to not understand how his words would be used against his candidate.
I love the old quote from Senator Gramm, “its time for people to get off the wagon, and help push it”
