Hoping to win on offshore drilling, GOP drops Alaska push

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans have dropped the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from their energy policy discussions, focusing instead on persuading Democrats to lift a moratorium on offshore drilling.

It's a move that has angered the longtime standard-bearer for drilling in ANWR, U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, who has vowed to put the issue back in front of his colleagues in the Senate.

"It's not off my table," Stevens said. "Unless you include Alaska in an energy solution, it's a non-solution."

The decision to drop the ANWR proposal comes as both the House and the Senate are considering legislation intended to respond to the rising cost of gasoline. The two chambers are considering a number of different proposals, including legislation that would clamp down on speculation in the oil commodities markets, which is suspected of forcing prices upward for consumers.

Other proposals include a push by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to have President Bush release fuel from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The government has stopped adding oil to the reserve, but advocates of releasing oil from the reserve say that wouldhelp drive down prices.

Stupid move. Put it ALL in front of the Dems and let them prove that they really are the party of NO. If you can do that and get the message out to the American public, the Dems will be out in November...

But the GOP isn’t that smart.

FWIW, I agree.

it’s a lack of GUTS, not smarts.

99.9% of the GOP’s problems could be solved if they got a backbone. 99.9%

Once again the GOP relents to the pressure of the socialist Democrats wit the losing mentality by reaching out to the other side in the name “compromise” and “bipartisanship”.

Do they like being the minority?

This issue is simple and could easily turn the coming Democrat tsunami this November but they are backing down.

Damn.

That's good, the Alaska pipeline is running at half capacity now, so it really couldn't stand all that extra use.

Dumb pubbies, you can always count on them.

If you can't drill in the unpopulated, Northern most reaches of Alaska, what in the hell makes you think you can drill off the coast of North Carolina?

ANWR is the EcoNazi firewall, if you can't drill there, you won't be able to drill ANYWHERE.

Seriously, who is the head idiot in charge of the GOP? Who's the mastermind behind the strategy of capitulation?

THIS JUST IN: The Democrats and Republicans are meeting separately to discuss "solutions"
to how THEY can make more money during the energy crisis.

All of you lamenting the lack of balls in the Republican party are missing the point. The Republican party leadership is giving us exactly what they want.

The current Republican leadership consists of liberal elites. These liberal elites would prefer to lead a minority party than serve in a majority. To be a majority, they must allow the conservatives to sit at the table of power. Rather than “lower” themselves to that level, they will deliberately stay a minority.

Senate Republicans, determined to drop Congress approval ratings even lower than 9%, “have dropped the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from their energy policy discussions, focusing instead on persuading Democrats to lift a moratorium on offshore drilling.”

GET A SPINE GOP!!!!!

The biggest and fastest bang for our buck is drilling ANWR. The GOP is crazy to give that up when we got them and McCain on the run.
We should throw in the Grand Canyon and the Mall just to show them we mean business.

Agreed. On the other hand, I would like to see the overall proposal on how the oil companies think they are going to get oil from ANWR (if the wells come in) out of Alaska.

I have previously stated that capacity figures for the Alyeska Pipeline are hard to find. You can find out how much they are sending down the pipeline at present, but the daily max is a number I have not found. It could be that if sufficient oil is found in ANWR another Pipeline could be required.

There is a lot of silence on the subject of transporting crude oil out of ANWR. All of which leads me to believe we are not getting the whole story. Time marches on, and the solutions are locked in the congeressional testical lockbox.

The Congress deserves all the blame and none of the glory.
Hopefully this will be the issue that shows the American people what they have to look forward too when all the energy eggs are in the bureaucratic basket.

Ask the environmentalists how can drilling in ANWR cause adverse impact when you have to travel 700 miles before you see the first tree?

I guess I could accept this strategy IF the GOP were successful in getting offshore drilling. However, I don’t think they will even get that now. I’m sure the thinking is that Anwr has become such a leftist symbol that it’s not worth the effort. That really is a cut and run defeated attitude. Instead of jacking up the made-for-TV hyperbolic rants as the Democrats always do for their issues, the minority GOP starts out by compromising first. That’s always a good way to get less than you bargained for. And even if they do get some sort of off-shore drilling, the Democrats will step up and take the credit now for “protecting Anwr”. Chumps.
