THE NEW YORK TIMES VS. HELMS, PART 529,876
July 9, 2008

Last Friday, on the Fourth of July, the great American patriot Jesse Helms passed away. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson also went to their great reward on Independence Day, so this is further proof of God.

Helms is now the second great American patriot I've always wanted to meet and never will, at least in this lifetime. The only other one is the magnificent Reagan aide Lyn Nofziger. (Wikipedia quote: "I sometimes lie awake at night trying to think of something funny that Richard Nixon said.")

After a week of hundreds of Helms obituaries -- one or two of which were not completely dishonest -- I will mention just a few items that were not addressed or given sufficient attention.

The two most obsessively discussed topics among Senate staffers are: (1) Who is the stupidest senator? (Sen. Barbara Boxer pulled into the lead when Sen. Lincoln Chafee retired), and (2) which senators are beastly and which are wonderful to their staff?

When I worked in the Senate in the '90s, the two senators famous for being absolute princes to work for were Sen. Helms and -- it pains me to tell you this, so you know it has to be true -- Sen. Teddy Kennedy. (He was so nice to his staffers, he frequently offered them rides home in his car after parties.)

I never knew -- and you never knew, unless you read one of the two honest obituaries this past week -- that in 1962 Helms and his wife "Dot" adopted a 9-year-old orphan with cerebral palsy. They already had two daughters and Helms was 41 years old at the time. But it was Christmastime and they read about Charlie in a newspaper. He said all he wanted for Christmas was a mother and father.

In the 1976 North Carolina Republican primary, Helms engineered Ronald Reagan's upset victory over Gerald Ford, the sitting president. That victory carried Reagan to the convention and made him the front-runner in 1980. The night Reagan won the 1980 presidential election, Helms famously uttered the beautiful words: "God has given America one more chance."

You have every reason to be proud of raising three conservative children. Oh, and why is Nixon wearing a bra? :-)

It's a good thing that Zevonismymuse does not charge "Associated Press" rates for using his words. :o)

Thanks for that link. I’ve been saying for weeks now that I may have to get loaded first, but I’m voting for McCain. It’s nice to see so many like-minded inebriates out there.

Beside the fact, it’s hard finding a good, conservative guy in a world in which we live in. Of course, I am sure that WE have some good looking, single guys right here on FR that would be a worthy companion for our Ann.

You got proof on that statement or are you just acting like a liberal today and spouting unfounded rhetoric....

Perhaps backing statements up with facts would be wise or perhaps not posting comments like that at all would be intelligent too.

do you know ann’s medical history or are you just supposing that due to the age she is incapable of reproduction... gee
what about all these ladies in their 50’s - 60’s and 70’s that are giving birth to their own grandchildern and kids at that age.... once again you comment is based in generalized fact and nothing more.... so why did you makeit... it adds nothing to the debate at hand and smacks of politics of personal destruction.... I.e. I cannot beat someones comments on facts or premise... so I will attack them as a person... That is how I see it... so yeah the rest of you comment is wierd because it does not fit into the discussion at hand...

“To paraphrase Dan Quayle, to be called a racist by these people is a badge of honor. Rest in peace, Jesse Helms: New York Times stock was recently lowered to a notch above junk bond status.”

When Jesse was running against Harvey Gantt, he and Dan Quayle made a visit to Wilmington (NC). I paid a $1000 for a seat at the table for lunch. I always considered it the best bucks I have ever spent. I got pics of my kids with them, but didn't get any of myself! I still have the invites, tho, and the cancelled check!

Jesse pulled NO punches. He roused the whole room and between the two of them, made more conservative sense in 1 hour, than I have heard since. There was talk of action, not pandering. Dan Q would have made a good President,IMHO, based on what I heard. It's a shame he was so conservative, that the press had to make sure he failed (potatoe). That much hasn't changed much.

The Democrats in NC left their base people, and became the racist party. Unfortunately, many of the rednecks have never gotten the message. They actually think the Dems represent THEM... LOL! The Republican Party of today's NC, are nowhere near as conservative as the Dems used to be... and seem to be fading fast!

When I first heard that Jesse Helms died last friday the first thing I thought about was that Jefferson & Adams also died on the 4th of July.

It doesn’t matter when Ann Coulter was born, if the Good Lord wants her to bare children, she will.

Ask Sarah about that. She laughed at the Lord, and then learned not to do that.

Abraham was no doubt highly amused.

Proof my daughter has a better voting record than the "Vote or Die" MTV crowd. This was a super Tuesday vote for Mitt. I dig the Grateful Dead PJs.

I am sure everyone is sorry that I learned how to post pictures, but here is one of my daughter when she was about 5 with Arianna Huffington, back when Arianna was pretending to be a Republican. You can see how creeped out my daughter seems to be; a sure indication that she knew Arianna was a phony.

To: Jim Robinson; All
On Monday, July 7th, at hour 1 of the Jerry Doyle Radio Show, Andrew Breitbart of Breitbart.com was hosting.
A listener had an interesting conversation with Andrew, mentioning that about half the posters on freerepublic liked the idea of getting drunk to vote for McCain and the other half said even liquor couldn't do it for them.

And then had a long on-air chat about Jim Robinson and how he created this massively important website , but gets no credit from the MSM, who are too busy writing encomiums about that little twit "kos."

To be fair, there are some McCain supporters here at Free Republic.

I could not vote for Schwarzenegger and the GOP unfortunately has a history of not backing conservatives, which has caused a ground swell of unhappy former GOP supporters who will not vote for the lesser of two evils anymore.

Ann is a Deadhead

I like this little snippet from an Interview With Ann:

Taylor Hill: When and how was your first Dead show?

Ann Coulter: I have no recollection of it whatsoever, other than that it was awesome.

TH: When and how was your last Dead show?

AC: I have no recollection of it whatsoever, other than that it was awesome.

LOL
